David Toews picks UND
By Brad Schlossman, Herald Staff Writer
Published Thursday, July 12, 2007

Jonathan Toews turned pro about two months ago, but that won't be the last time Grand Forks sees a Toews in a Sioux jersey.

Jonathan's younger brother, David, gave a verbal commitment Wednesday to attend UND beginning in 2008.

"I called coach (Dave) Hakstol and told him that this is what I want. There's no reason to wait. I'm 100 percent committed to coming there," said Toews, a Winnipeg native. "I've always loved everything about North Dakota. Jon had a great experience and I'm really excited to play there."

David might not go No. 3 overall in the NHL draft like his brother, but he's set on carving his own identity. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound forward led Shattuck-St. Mary's prep team in scoring last season. . . . as a junior. . . . playing half of the season with a broken wrist.

Since 2001-02, other players to lead Shattuck in scoring are Tyler Ruegsegger (Denver freshman), Sidney Crosby, Zach Parise and Jonathan Toews.

"I try to be a goal scorer, but sometimes I'll rough it up in the corners," said David, who shoots right-handed. "I'm sort of a power forward. My brother and I play similar styles.

"A lot of people do (compare us). I try not to focus much on that. I focus on my game, take pointers that my brother and other people give me. As far as who is better at what that doesn't matter to us. We're working together to better ourselves."

At midseason, David was the fourth-leading scorer on his Shattuck team. A cast was removed from his wrist at Christmas and he caught fire in the second half.

David led the national midget tournament in scoring and helped Shattuck bring home the championship. The 17-year-old finished the season with 81 points (34 goals, 47 assists) in 61 games. Nobody else on his team had more than 70 points.

Recently, he was one of the only college-eligible players named to Team Canada's Under-18 camp. He will report in early August and will travel overseas for the tournament if he makes the squad.

Despite being drafted by Lincoln of the United States Hockey League, Toews said he will play his senior season at Shattuck before coming to UND.

"It's a relief to make the commitment, but I still have a lot of work to do before getting there," Toews said. "I'm going to keep working hard and stay focused so I'm able to make an impact as a freshman."

Wow, that is impressive to led Shattuck in scoring with player like Crosby, Parise and his borther doing it before him. Has someone ever seen him play, i would like to know more info on him. i like that fact that he plays like his brother but i want to know if he has first line center capablilty.

i think toews has to proove himself more if he wants to go first round. Its not always the last naem trick that always works.

did u read the article above your post? im curious? because it clearly shows in that article hes making a name for HIMSELF.. not his brother making the name for him and himself.

He sure made a name for himself at the Canada Winter Games in January. I thought he was the second best forward in the tournament next to Stamkos and I think he'll help solidify his position as a top 10 pick in this year's draft at the u-18's in August. He may not be quite as good as his brother but I think the gap is much closer than a lot of people believe.

Did you by any chance see the Canada Winter Games? His team Manitoba made it to the finals against Ontario and he was literally on the ice 70% of the game. I remeber they kept the kid on for 3 shifts in a row because they needed a goal. I thought he was no doubt the best player on the ice and he was playing against guys like Stamkos, Pietrangelo, Del Zotto. I think he should be rated higher for the draft but thats just my opinion

2008 draft rankings

hey, have rankings for the 2008 draft been released yet? And if so, what sites are they on? I have been trying to find them for the last few days and have not been able to find anything. I am looking for the players that will be coming out of high school and college.

that's actually a pretty good ranking, luongo. I'd personally have Sauve, Wahl, and Poulin a bit higher; great things I think are going to be expected of Poulin. Despite a bit of a rocky first go for Sauve, he's still a great great prospect... I'm expecting a big season for him and while many are considering him a bit of a faller right now, I'll be seeing him as a riser, myself.

If I may, my personal opinion is that Toews, as of right now of course and with much time to change (good or bad), has great second centerman potential right now... as it says in the article, he plays a similar game to Toews... considers himself a scorer, but to play at the level of his brother, he has a good bit of improvement ahead of him though I don't doubt he can become a good player.

If you want to know all the top prospects as the season starts you may want to add Burnaby defenceman Patrick Wiercoch (sp?) to the list. Those who watched Turris last yearcan attest to the fact that he and Stefishen (Langley) at this point look like the BCJHL'S annual 1st round candidates.
