There are a lot of people here who are following some fallacious logic in that he is a disruptor and gritty player and that he is defined by those descriptors. He makes smart play after smart play, and it's only going to get better. Easily the second smartest player on the Flames next to Gaudreau.

Two years from now Tkachuk at 5.5, if this somehow happens, is one of the best contracts in the league

Then that would make this a very important season for Matt to showcase his full offensive arsenal. Cause, my belief is that for a player, don’t sign long term if you feel that you have more offense to give ( getting to another level from what you have currently showed) otherwise you end up with a jossi contract of $4 million per year for $28 million when over those same 7 years if he did a bridge for $4-$5 million total he would have gotten $6.5-$7 million on the next deal per season so after 7 years he’d likely earns closer to $40 million. So that is at least $10 million left on the table and why everyone says he’s on such a great contract. Great for the team, him not such much but he opted for security which he got.

Matt same thing. If he can be a 65 point or better player, this is the year he’s got to show it to land a bigger contract. He’ll still get paid as Saad signed back in 2015 coming off a 47 and 52 point 2nd and 3rd elc year as a LW and landed $6 million per. So staying at the same low 50 range Matt should still get that $6 million plus the inflation of the salary cap to make it a $6.5 million cap hit.

Was more expected of Saad in CBS? Should he have been a 60 point guy for them rather than back to back 53 point seasons?

I believe you pay guys based on what you expect them to produce. But you need to see evidence that they are capable of hitting those targets.

I'm thinking he lands around 6x6. Maybe closer to 7 if there are extra years added. Kid's gonna be good for 50+ points, is very solid defensively, especially for his age, and brings a ton of sandpaper. There aren't a lot of players in the league who bring all the things he does in one package.

Saad wasn't really paid as "6M for a 50ish point player" it was more "6M for the 50 point player who helped us get these 2 cups".

Tkachuk's 4 playoff games with a -2 , 4 PIM doesn't really carry the same prestige

Calgary likes to internally cap players based on importance to the team, Sean's 6,375,000 AAV is a pretty good number to guess they'd want to sign Tkachuk to as they are going to be the core guys behind Gaudreau to this forward group. Would love 7-8 years at that price.

Internal Caps make no common sense... Monahan signed in 2016, and Tkachuk would sign his deal in 2019. What would the cap have gone up by in those 3 years? So, if I bought the nicest house on the block for $1 million in 2016, then no one else on the block should expect to get $1 million for theirs in 2019? Of course not, the market will dictate the price. If the cap is going up, then expect other players to match or surpass it in the future.

It was Columbus that signed him to his deal. However, they justify his contract at the time, it's now a fair comparable to someone like Tkachuk to use in negotiations, factoring in the rise in the salary cap.
