Time to get rid of offsides review

Something this egregious happens once every 10 years. So to prevent that, we have to deal with stupid offsides challenges nearly every game? Get rid of it.

NFL won’t get rid of video, for catches out of bounds, or video review of outs called on bases.
The genie isn’t going back in the bottle now.
As Gary said when implemented originally, be careful what you wish for.

Strong supporter of getting rid of it. In almost all cases, it’s inconsequential to the outcome of a goal. I understand the need for it when it comes to goaltender’s interference or a high stick deflection, but reversing a goal for being offside by a matter of milliseconds is such a ridiculous concept.

Why not allow teams to challenge whether a player reached the centerline before dumping it in while we’re at it?

Yeah, sadly, the effect this has on the game is that you can no longer be excited about anything in the moment. What's the point in celebrating when the goal might get called off anyway? It really hurts the enjoyability of the sport.

Now that I think about it, this might even be the reason that I've been less excited about watching NHL lately. The fact that you can't trust any play happening in the moment and can't properly get emotional about good calls, bad calls, good goals, bad goals, until way after they happen, just takes away from the soul of the game.

Sort of off topic, but I feel the same way about the NFL. A big play happens and you have to wait to make sure there were no random flags thrown to negate it (that usually has nothing to do with the play). Some announcers even say "there are no flags on the field" during the play so you can relax and enjoy the outcome in the moment.

I think some time limit for offside challenges makes sense. If a team scores off the rush, and it was offside, sure call it back.

But if the defensive team gets the puck, loses it, or has chances to clear and fails . . . then a goal is scored 30 seconds later . . . f*** the offside.

Either a time limit, or the other team touching the puck or something. I'm fine with the reviews, but there has to be some kind of parameters around it.

I've been saying since they first started the reviews should only be done in real time. The frame by frame reviewing is unrealistic for a human to call right on the ice.

If you find some rule dumb, scrap offside altogether, but complaining about disallowing illegal goal is WTF on massve level.

I think offside reviews should continue. Just how they review offsides should change, something like if you can't see it clearly in slow motion without going frame by frame for 5minutes, the call on the ice stands. Take away the most obvious mistakes, and just accept that in a fast sport like hockey half inch of skate over the line doesn't matter

Offside isn’t something that’s subjective, you are either onside or offside by how much is irrelevant. A while ago I saw a suggestion of considering the puck in the zone once it touches the blue line rather than being completely pass the blueline, I think a minor rule adjustment like that is a good solution. NCAA has a rule about possession as well which could work.

You absolutely nailed it. Any even questionable entry makes me nervous instead of excited- there are times I want em to go back just in case, which is f***ing ridiculous.

Yeah, let's go back to the good ol' days when offside goals counted!

If we need to get every single call exactly right, let's also review every time the linesman whistles a play down for offside, to ensure that it actually was offside. If they got it wrong, and the play was onside, line all the players up in the exact position and spot on the ice they were when the whistle blew, give the puck back to whomever was the puck carrier, and resume play from there.

We need to see this happen. We have to get the calls right.

The offsides review has long been an embarrassment, but today, the embarrassment may have peaked. The Sabres apparently beat the Oilers with 2 seconds left in overtime. Everyone had celebrated and moved into the locker room. TV had gone to commercial. Fans were making their way to the exits. Suddenly, out of the blue, Toronto buzzes in and says NO GOAL because twenty seconds earlier, there was an apparent, maybe, sort of offsides. This was that offsides.

The Sabres went on to win in a shootout, but the embarrassment for the league remains. It’s time to put these ridiculous replays to bed. It’s a bad look for everyone.

The thing which surprised me though was than as soon as the game was over the refs went straight to the review boot. Is this normal, or did they suspect is was an offside?

I said few times in the past that the biggest issue with the offside reviews is that the refs will often not blow the wistle if they think it is offside but they are not 100%, they just let the play go and have the review fix it if needed. I know it is not possible to know, but without offside review this play may have been called offside live.
