Red - thanks for the stats - noticed something in the AHL stats:

McEneny (22) GP 34 G 5 A 4 P 9 PIM 14 Shots 68 -3
Virtanen (19) GP 33 G 5 A 4 P 9 PIM 24 Shots 75 -7

The stats of our undrafted defenceman, who clawed his way up from an overage year in CHL and a season in the ECHL, looking pretty similar to the 6th overall choice in 2014...

Yep. It's a complete failure of a pick right now given the context. And again, yeah sure he could turn things around and be like, alright, but that might not happen for years (when he's likely no longer part of our organization). 3 of the next 4 picks are taking regular shifts as good NHLers, and 2 of them are arguably on a fast track to NHL stardom.

To put it into further perspective, Michael Chaput played 10 games in Utica, and still put up like 145% of Virtanen's production so far.

Better comparison since they have 5 years between them, Chaput's first AHL season: Springfield Falcons AHL 73 13 19 32

It really is amazing how poorly he's going.

I said when he was sent down that I expected him to struggle for 20 games because he was clearly a player whose confidence was shot and who needed to rebuild it, so I wasn't going to jump all over him right away, but we're now 33 games into the season and he has 2 points in his last 15 games. The results aren't getting better.

I mean, yeah, Chaput is obviously older, but he's also a completely unremarkable player.

If Virtanen doesn't pick it up, the worst thing will be watching Ehlers and Nylander light it up in the NHL for the next decade....I swear many posters on this board could make better picks in the top-10 of the draft.

Depressing. Besides Horvat, we just can't get a 1st round pick right. It's too early to make a call on Boeser and Juolevi, although they're at least looking good so far.

Hodgson
Schroeder
Jensen
Gaunce
Shinkaruk
Virtanen

Ugh.

Wow!...when you lay them out like that, ranging from '09 -'014, you realize how dismal the first round has actually been.....and if McCann doesn't make in Florida then that makes seven first-rounders who've basically busted to varying degrees...and they call this a 'rebuild'?:shakehead

In defense, Hodgson was ranked as the number one prospect in the world at one point in his +1 year ... but yeah, just sad ....

True.

You have to wonder how much of the problem in Vancouver is development. As has been discussed before, a lot of our picks were good picks at the time.

I think that's a statement on how hit and miss 1st rounders can be rather than an indictment of the Canucks drafting. You could literally do this with every team and see a similar thing. Note that 4 of those 6 players were picked at the end of the first round....

I know people like to compare Juolevi vs Tkachuk

But I truly believe Clayton Keller is going to be better than both them.

I'd say at the time Hodgson was a great pick the injury played a factor and maybe got too much too soon in Buffalo was tracking well with us his rookie year, Schroeder taken 22nd was boom or bust (he set some US world junior record, 5th rated North American skater by Central Scouting feel like it was a good pick at the time), and I liked the Shinkaruk pick but I think the kids heart got in the way trying to play through that injury to make the world junior team.

Thank god for Gaudette... or this would be a particularly depressing start to 2017.

Point where I actually got really worried about Virtanen was this dumb hit that he got suspended for:

Kassian-like idiocy. Out on an island by himself having no idea what to do.

Also just weird to hear reports of him getting physically worked over in the AHL. Back in the WHL, he was almost Ovechkin-like in his ability to withstand hits, dish them back out. Probably one of the more promising aspects of his play. Of course, it's a different league, but he looks small and weak in highlight packages. Wonder what's going on with his shoulder.
