Can someone clearly define for me what role would this guy succeed in ideally?

He can't succeed in Pitt playing with Malkin, and getting PP time, what is he even worth?

Three bags of practice pucks, a fifth rounder and the Pens retain 500k of salary.

He's not getting #1 PP unit time and he has barely played with Malkin. The Panthers got a 3rd for Brassard last year and he was a heinously bad player for both the Penguins and Panthers (and later the Avs). Galchenyuk isn't bringing back less than that.

He's still decently productive, he's on pace for about 35 points and has been a clear positive on the powerplay. Galchenyuk has essentially been the same exact player he was last year for the Coyotes.

Uh. No? Why would Edmonton remotely consider this? Galchenyuk is more expensive, has less term, and is an absolute non factor. Larsson would have significantly more value than that on the open market.
if pitts add this a possibility no??

I can’t imagine what you’d add to make this sensible for Edmonton. A right side defence of Bear, Benning, and Russell or Jones is nowhere near good enough for the playoffs and it’s not like Galchenyuk is some big upgrade at forward.

Seems like a fairly good amount with Malkin:

And some good PP1 time as well:

I've never like Galchenyuk because he always seemed lazy to me so I admit my opinion of him is skewed. Penguins will be better off without him, just as the Coyotes are.

1. Galchenyuk has spent 3.5x as much ice time away from Malkin at 5v5 than with Malkin (source). He basically played 5 full games with Malkin and 3 partial games with Malkin, of which the results were pretty good (59.5% xGF%).
2. Galchenyuk has only played 25 minutes on the year on the top powerplay unit. For comparison, Letang (who is inarguably on their top powerplay unit) has spent 105 minutes on the top powerplay unit. This is based on TOI with/without Crosby and Malkin. Galchenyuk has only been on the top powerplay unit for about 6 games, he was like the 8th option for the top powerplay unit (after Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Letang, Schultz, Hornqvist and Rust)

He didn't mesh with Malkin, but Sullivan is notoriously quick at pulling the plugs on experiments he doesn't immediately like, and he has been good on the powerplay. He is what he was for his last 2 teams, he's a powerplay specialist that will help your powerplay and not help you at ES.

So do you want to keep him or are you happy if the Penguins get a third rounder for him?

I'm happy to get a 3rd for him. Don't mistake what I'm saying to be that he has been good here, he's been an absolute dud, I was just commenting on something you said. He's a powerplay specialist on a team that has 2 generational talents playing in the powerplay spots that he would play in. It's not super surprising that he didn't work here.

I also think he needs to be playing center, but again, same issue as the powerplay. I think he'd be good for a team like Nashville (powerplay help) or Buffalo (stopgap 2C until Mittelstadt figures it out).

Not wanting to be adamant on anything regarding value here.
Chucky is a better player than he has shown with the Pens, obviously. Much like was the case when we had to deal Brassard. The reality that he has not been putting up points and is a soon to be UFA just means that there won't be much of a market for him, more so as anyone contending will be leery of adding a player who is somewhat dodgy defensively when he isn't putting up points.

There are plenty of excuses as to why he hasn't panned out. From injury to Sullivan just clearly not liking him much. When he has been consistent minutes in a middle 6 role he has been OK.

IMO this makes sense for a bubble team or bottom team that will treat this as an audition for next season.

What about Galchenyuk and a 2nd to San Jose for a 5th or Sorensen if you want a bottom six winger?

Must be a different Larsson.

Galchenyuk gets someone like Sam Gagner or Alex Chiasson.
