TSN TradeCentre: Galchenyuk back on the market?

On his segment of TSN That's Hockey, Pierre Lebrun mentioned that the Penguins are trying to move Galchenyuk before the deadline, saying that his set of skills is not necessarily fit for the role that he has in PIT. Also mentioning that they will look to replace Jake Guentzel on Sid or Geno's wing...

With that being said what kind of winger PIT could look for to help them in their SCPOs run

He'll be traded for like a 3rd, similar to what Brassard brought back last year.

In terms of wingers, I'm expecting Saad for a winger with term and Toffoli for a rental. Those are the 2 most likely trade candidates for the Penguins IMO.

He's still a very capable player IMHO. He's showed some real good flashes in Pittsburgh here and there. He really defines that "he doesn't fit" thing. He just operates on a different wavelength than the guys he's been playing with. I think if you happen to find those two guys, he could still be that 25-30g scorer. The skill set is there.

I see a couple scenarios:

1. 1:1 swap for similar situation player where contract and cap hit are similar.
2. Out to a team for a pick or prospect where the team is taking on full salary. In this case, a 3rd is about right. Any retention bumps it up to a 2nd or adds a prospect.
3. Included in the package for the winger replacement. See offers in the Saad thread.

taking nothing back in salary from Galchenyuk and adding arguably the two best wingers on the market would be... Uhm. Impressive.

I don't think they'd add 2 top end wingers, I just think they'll move Galchenyuk out, add an expensive top-6 forward and use whatever cap space they have left on a depth D and depth forward.

With everyone tight on cap contenders likely want a for sure thing when making a trade. 5M for a potential healthy scratch is not overly appealing. I see Pittsburgh sending him going the other way once they trade for a top six to even out the cap.

Is this fair pens fan? Don’t know at all what Galchenyuk’s value is at all.

2nd + Galchenyuk for Andreas Anthanasiou

Can someone clearly define for me what role would this guy succeed in ideally?

He's pretty much a powerplay specialist at this point. He's a guy who needs to be playing center to be at his maximum effectiveness, but his play away from the puck is too bad to justify playing him at center. He's a non-factor on wing because he can't carry the puck and drive the play like he does at center.

Someone like Buffalo should acquire him to be their 2C, though. He's better than what they have for the spot, even with his flaws.

Wasnt this reported by Friedman in november

Yes, then the Penguins got a bunch of injuries and Galchenyuk looked good for a couple of games in an elevated role in December/January. There was a thought that he was going to be able to grasp a spot with Guentzel's injury, but then was promptly demoted to a 4th line role for Dominik Simon because he went back to being ass.

A swap for a skater who needs a change of scenery is the only thing that makes sense for the Pens. Having him as depth is more valuable to us than any pick he’d realistically return.

Craig Smith would light it up for the Pens. And Preds are shopping him right now.

The reason I could see this happening is that Nashville has a bad powerplay, and one thing Galchenyuk is definitely a positive is is on the powerplay. Galchenyuk has 5 powerplay points while not playing on the Penguins top powerplay unit this year, that's really good for the limited ice time that the 2nd unit gets.

If you need a guy for your powerplay on the right side of the ice, I think Galchenyuk would be an asset there. It's why he has put up big powerplay numbers in each of the last 2 years with Montreal and Arizona.
