I think the Knights are not being truthful in saying Foley and Vegas never contacted them. I refuse to believe that when Black Knights was dropped the next logical choice wasn't pursued with vigor. Either that or the league told them flat out not to use just Knights to avoid conflict with London. It's for these reasons that you have mentioned, BB, that I think that "Knights" is still in play.
I just don't see how a junior hockey team (albeit one that probably makes more money than some NHL teams) can trademark the very generic word "Knights".
"Mark Sommers" of Las Vegas owns the domain name, but who's to say that he hasn't already sold the name to Foley's group in principle.
The Hunters (Dale, Mark) own the London Knights and the family is tight with the NHL.
I could see the Hunters, NHL, Adidas, the Foley group agreeing to play the diversion game to keep the hounds off the scent until they could have a desired surprise announcement. It's become part of the game.
I cannot, however, see West Point being a part of any "deception".
I can also appreciate that, while they may have been honoured by Foley's desire, they would not want to share their "Black Knights" name.
I believe Foley when he says that Black Knights is out.
I believe that anything to do with "Hawks" is done. Good.
So, my money now would be with...
1- "Knights"
2- some variation of Knights..."Silver Knights", "Neon Knights"
3- "Peregrines" moves to the front as maybe the "bird" option
- great potential imagery and logo, but the word itself may be a little tricky (at first)
4- "Aces"...not looking good for what's been the most popular option (by far), but it seems to hang in there.
- if ALL ELSE FAILS (for whatever reasons), I share DuckJet's opinion that the NHL should lift it's stupid ban on a great option....(and MGM (part of the ownership group) owns the LasVegasAces.com domain)
There are two different types of trademarks you're going to see. Wordmarks and logos. We're concerned about wordmarks. All the one you're likely seeing accomplishes makes sure that if the team is the Knights, that the word Knights can't be written like that. You've got to think of it as a drawing more than a name in those cases, even though it's a drawing of a word. It's trademarked like a drawing of a smiley face would be trademarked. You could still call your business "Smiley Face Donuts" you just couldn't draw the smiley face that way and use in in commerce.
No kidding.I keep trying to get out of this discussion because there's really nothing to talk about, but it keeps pulling me in. I'm like Michael Corleone.
All I'm sure of right now after all of the conflicting statements, after the domains, after everything, is that last week's leak isn't real. If they're going to register the domain under Black Knight financial services where are the new domains? Surely somebody would've found new domains by now.
Someone's watching Twitter, the blogs, this message board and having a good time watching us try to figure it out. To them I say, pick something good. If you come to us with Neon Knights after all of this, we've got major beef.
Well now I'm sold.Eklund Hockey Buzz web site said last week that one of this sources had said that it could be the Las Vegas Mountain Bluebirds.

There are other organisations against the name as well, once he started getting resistance from his old school Ibelieve. Why should he even bother calling the London Knight. The would be no point. One group as already said no, so why call the other.
You know, Savages isn't terrible.Maybe I'm a little late to the party but I came up with some serious, tough, mean ideas for a name
Las Vegas Carnage
Las Vegas Savages
Las Vegas Demise
Las Vegas Doom
Las Vegas Torture
Las Vegas Reapers
Las Vegas Force
Las Vegas Slayers
Las Vegas Rage
Las Vegas Horsemen
Las Vegas Apocalypse
You probably want me to stop already I hope you get an original and deserving name for the franchise. Good luck!

...
Las Vegas Gold seems to be resonating in the ether. Or it's just the alcohol starting to kick in.
I'm guessing Savages wouldn't pass the political correctness test.
Yeah, but having Fred Savage as our mascot would be pretty cool.
Las Vegas Gold with all silver jerseys to mess with everybody.
Joking aside, "Vegas Gold" and silver will both be featured colors in the logo and/or jerseys, I think it's safe to say.

I think within that there should be some limits on how not intimidating the team name is. Like Las Vegas Ballerinas should be killed with fire.
