It is too early to count points, but what we do know is that Canada needs 12 points and 11 likely won't suffice.

It's not too early to take a realistic look on what the scenario might be for Canada. Let's be realistic that Italy and Norway won't get many more points here. So in this hypothetical scenario I simply added 3 points for each team that didn't play vs those teams yet.

Kazakhstan:Norway and Latvia:Norway are 50/50 60/40 games.

Both can lose points.

I'm aware of that. I simply added a direction for the final minimum points table. I never said that I think it's going to end up like that. Norway can do harm to KAZ, I'm aware of that, but in this scenario I considered KAZ to beat them as I kept it simple and added +3 points for each team that would face ITA or NOR.

I also think that Finland can choke vs LAT or GER, but I didn't write it in that estimation, because I wanted to simplify it. My original post wasn't focused on head to head match ups.

Just skimmed this thread. Are people seriously slagging Luongo for having a bare-bones lineup? Convincing players to travel to Europe on short notice, after a difficult season, to a scaled back tournament where they will likely get limited support and no reinforcements is a challenge at the best of times. Throw in the pandemic, during which guys have probably missed out on seeing friends and family and it's that much more difficult.

In years past, Hockey Canada used the Olympics as a carrot to entice players on the fence - the idea being that if there were two players of more-or-less equal calibre being considered for the Olympics, the player who had more service with Hockey Canada at worlds, for example, might get the preferential nod. With NHL participation in the Olympics still up in the air, that is no longer in play.

So what's a team GM supposed to do? They got some legitimate NHLers, and a few top-six forwards, to commit. They got a bunch of young guys to commit. They have a legitimate starting goaltender. Throw 'em all in a blender and hope for the best. The lack of prep time didn't help, nor did the lack of pre-tournament games or the quarantine rules. It would be unfortunate if this team missed the quarter finals, but ultimately, it's on the players.

Weird year. Back in the good old days (like the last ten years) we had enough depth at this tournament to roll 4 lines and wear other teams down. This year it's us playing 4 D and 2.5 lines. Can't complain about Henrique, Brown or Mangiapone, they are contributing. Comtois hasn't shown anything except to take a raft of penalties. As for KHL, euro-based pros I expected more from Danforth, I don't think he has a point. Paul is a defensive specialist so he's playing as expected. I thought the city was shut-down but most of the team are playing like they have a really bad hangover.

I think he's looked good. He adds a different element to the team. He's scrappy and a bit unpredictable and this team (especially on the PP) needs that badly. I'd say he immediately added some energy and considering the COVID protocol requiring a 6 day quarantine that's impressive.

The real quarantine is only 2 days though. After those two days you're allowed to join the team for training.

yeah, play out the remaining games at this point and call it done. I'm already formulating my roster wish list for next year's Helsinki/Tampere tournament.

spoiler alert 1 player in particular on this year's roster will not be on my WHC roster wish list for the next few years, at least.

Any of the recent Spengler Cup teams for Canada would have been better.

This is a wide open tourney, when Peter Cehlarik is the top scorer and could never make it on Boston.

The top goal scorer is from Britain with 5 goals - Liam Kirk and 4th in pts

Second and 3rd place point getters are from power houses Kazakhstan and Denmark

Why next year? Not eliminated yet. Take care of Italy and get ready for Finn's? Or have you been mathematically eliminated?

Some things never change for Comtois in international hockey. I’ve been super busy lately and haven’t watched a single minute of this tournament and I usually follow it pretty closely.

Once I saw the roster for Team Canada this year, I knew we’d be in for a rough tournament.

Wow, that's a pathetic roster for being Canada. You'd expect this years rosters to be better than usual due to the decreased amount of games this season.
No one wants to travel to Europe and i don't blame them. Trying to get back into Canada will be a circus.

Winning this tournament is not particularly all that important. It's nice, but it's just a bonus, a perk to what this tournament is and why I follow it. It's a training exercise for a select few players with A-Team Team Canada aspirations to get in some reps for future best-on-best tournaments. It's pretty obvious at this point that this iteration of TC there are zero players who will be pushing for spots on a best on best TC roster in the next 4 year Olympic cycle anyway. If Dach had not been injured as was there and if Lafreniere had accepted an invite, if Jamie Drysdale had accepted an invite, players of that caliber and ilk, I'd still be interested in this team/tournament. My prediction when the roster was named that they should qualify for a 1/4 final game, but should be done by then. They weren't prepared, were poorly prepared, and that's what happens with zero practice/prep time. So, on to next year's roster.

already revealing my roster wish list for 2022 :)

We're 6 games into this and something like 12 guys on the roster still don't have a single point.....

If I didn't watch every time the Czechs sent a subpar roster, I'd have to quit watching international hockey.

Canada is improving greatly in this tourney I still like their chances here. Game against Finland should be high drama and then a quarter match (which might be Russia). It's just getting good.

I'd also have a lot more interest if there was a guy or two on the team who you could project to the best on best level. There is almost always at least one of those but this time it seems very unlikely, at least in the near future. I do like that Perfetti and Power are there as potential WJC contributors next year, but that's because I value Canada winning the WJC far, far more than I do Canada winning the IIHF WC, and even then it hasn't been enough to get me watching outside of parts of two games. I'll pretty much look to find out how Power did and be content with that. If Canada wins the tournament that's all well and good and if Canada is out before the quarterfinals that's perfectly fine.

I am glad for the players who did go over that they've turned it around somewhat and gotten some wins they can look back on.

so canada has to win in regulation against finland and hope germany/latvia goes to OT to advance?
Ask me after Kazak vs Norway... has some big implications on Canada. You need to cheer for Norway this afternoon!
