We will need some size, but let's not forget the mistakes of the past. There were times when we focused on beating the USA, and when we did in 1998 we weren't built for any other team. I like Stone in there, we could use him for a lot of things, but while we're at it, why not add Tom Wilson as perhaps the 13th guy. There are lots of scenarios you can use him in. It wouldn't be crazy to use him with a talented centre while he does a lot of the grunt work.

It would be crazy. Wilson is not an Olympic caliber player. Full stop. Stone is a Selke caliber winger who produces at a ~PPG, has put together back to back stellar playoff performances in Vegas, and has represented Canada numerous times. There really is no comparison.

Yeah, if Tom Wilson ever made a Canadian Olympic team I would have to watch only from a bar where I can't get at a TV to toss it across the room. And if I absolutely had to take a RWer not named Stone or Marner, it would be Drake Batherson, and Tom Wilson wouldn't get a nanosecond of consideration.

14 forward spots. there will be 4 wingers. in no particular order those 4 will be Huberdeau, Marchand, Marner and Stone. The rest will be centers.

I think Stone fits better down the lineup than Marner. He has the size advantage, is excellent defensively, has the intensity that Marner currently lacks.

You are going to be facing some big teams in Russia and US. Stone can play in those games better than Marner can at this moment. Marner has plenty of talent, but lacks the next step to be Team Canada material.

why does he need to play down the lineup? he is the best natural winger canada has and it isnt particularly close

RW
Marner - 32pts (Behind ONLY McDavid and Draisaitl)
Stone - 17pts

i dont care how good stone is defensively. 4 goals on the year, he isnt playing top 9 if he makes the team.

Marner is not only an absolute lock, but is now a heavy favorite to line up alongside Mcdavid

this thread is beyond ridiculous

Point - McDavid - Mackinnon
Marchand - Bergeron - Crosby
Stamkos - Couturier - Stone
Huberdeau - O`Reilly - Couture
ex: Marner, Tom Wilson (beef!), Cirelli, RNH

Extras can all kill penalties and bring different skill sets in the event of injuries.

Makar - Weber
Ekblad - Pietrangelo
Ellis - Doughty
Morrisey, Muzzin, Theodore - good blend of everything here.

Goalies all suck - bring whoever is hot at the time.

this is the worst roster i have ever seen posted.

Imagine leaving a dude who is 3rd in league scoring off the roster, then having a goalie with a .888sv% as the starter

Not to derail this thread but I hope that the Team Canada brass doesn't try to tailor their team to beat specific opponents (or maybe I do hope that!). For instance, I wouldn't have it in my mind the the U.S. is going to bring the Broad Street Bullies. Aside from a few players it's likely to be a more finesse oriented roster. There will be some jam, but I don't think it will be an overly big team.

If I was picking Team Canada this is who I would go with (please forgive pairings/forward lines):

Goaltenders (x3):

MAF
Mackenzie Blackwood
Carey Price/Carter Hart (I think Price ends up on this team even though his play has declined considerably)

Defensemen (x8):

Alex Pietrangelo/Shea Theodore
Cale Makar/Drew Doughty
Kris Letang/Morgan Reilly
Colton Parayko/Thomas Chabot

Forwards (x14):

Huberdeau/McDavid/Marner
Marchand/Crosby/Bergeron
Point/MacKinnon/Stone
Stamkos/Scheifele/O'Reilly
Couturier/Tavares

Team Canada will always be a favorite for gold and this iteration will have a ton of talent. That said, there are some "concerns":

* Goaltending depth is atrocious, close to worst of any of the major hockey playing nations. I think the Team Canada brass desperately wants Price to regain Vezina form but that's questionable. The alternatives are relatively unproven. MAF might very well be the best current option!

* A very mobile and creative puck-moving defense. Not a lot of jam, but I don't think that's a significant liability with the way the game is played now

* Awesome forward group, in particular at center but I find it interesting there are so few natural wingers. Just from a scoring perpective that doesn't appear to be an area of strength either. That said, the overwhelming center depth should more than make up for that as most of these guys can shift to the wing as needed

Only on HFB is Mitch 3rd in league scoring Marner not Team Canada material Whilst Tom Wilson must be brought to “play in multiple situations”

For the record, I have Marner on there for sure. I just hope he doesn't get too fancy in this short tournament and forget to shoot when it would help the most. That's all.

Wilson at best would be a 13th forward. Him being on the team is not a strange idea. Canada always picks a guy similar to him. Canada used to win gold all of the time with somewhat of a ghost roster and an "energy line" that was often the best line on the team. They have to be able to score too of course, but those lines always could.

Think Brenden Morrow in 2010. There are some skilled guys who deserved it perhaps and were better than Morrow. St. Louis, Carter, Stamkos, all were sitting at home. Morrow had 2 goals and an assist in 2010. He contributed, let's just say. And he was some much needed grind and sandpaper. Sometimes Canada has relied too much on this. I think 1998 comes to mind. Maybe 2006 as well when they had Smyth, Doan, Bertuzzi and Draper on the team with much more skilled guys at home. But I think you need to keep at least one of them for that reason. Plus Wilson kills penalties. You need more than just Marchand and Bergeron to kill them, you need at least one other forward who is good at it, maybe two. Bottom line is, I can see him on the team for those reasons. I remember Steve Yzerman saying that he wanted Bergeron on the team in 2010 specifically for the scenario that he has a right handed face off specialist. No kidding. Bergeron was not the player he is today, he was injured a lot back then and I wondered how we could leave some more offensive guys off the team, but it was a good choice, even if Bergeron was hurt for some of the 2010 Olympics if I remember. I figure you have at least 9-10 purely offensive guys for your top three lines. The rest still more or less need to score, but you have them in different situations. For example, I could see Wilson playing a game against Team USA and doing pretty good in his role.

To be quite honest, there was serious consideration for Milan Lucic to be on the 2014 Olympic team. He was a hot commodity at that time. He didn't make it, perhaps because of the big ice and skating concerns, but either way, he was considered much in the way Wilson probably is. Let's just say I would be willing to bet his name comes up in meetings.

Great roster. And I think that is very similar to what will eventually get picked.

The only name I would remove is Letang. He is too volatile to be on a team in a single-elimination tournament. He has a tendency to take boneheaded penalties.

If it was a best-of-7 format, then a single boneheaded penalty wouldn't eliminate you and his consistency would become a strength.

But a single boneheaded penalty has a much bigger chance of eliminating you in a best-of-1 situation.

Discipline and focus become much more important in a tournament like the Olympics, where every game is like a Game 7.

Regarding Marner - remember that in 2010 Yzerman left Stamkos (who was leading the NHL in goals at the time of announcing the roster) and his linemate St. Louis (top five in points at the time, iirc) off the roster. In 2014, St. Louis was the defending Art Ross winner and was left off the original roster. Hockey Canada, under the Yzerman/Armstrong regime, has a notable aversion to playmaking wingers. Marner certainly deserves to make the team (unless his play falls off a cliff of course) but I wouldn’t be totally shocked if he’s left off. Same goes for Huberdeau.

Regarding Wilson, we don’t need him. They may not lay the body like Wilson does, but the Crosby line is a nightmare to play against and a potential 4th line of Scheifele, Couturier and Stone averages 6’3”, 210+ lbs in size. That’s great size, along with much better defensive play, offensive skill, and discipline (one of the major risks in bringing guys like Wilson, Lucic, etc. to international tournaments is them taking stupid penalties).

Man Canada's goaltending does not look good. An aging Flurry and broken down Price.

Need Hart to turn into an elite level player before the next Olympics.

I think Nurse will be on Team Canada, he's mobile and good at being a puck transporter lugging it up ice. He's also a horse defensively and very physical along the walls/in front of the net.

At the end of the day given Nurse's size and speed along with what I just mentioned, I think he'll excel on the big ice and likely makes the 2022 roster.

I would just like to apologize to anyone who read my "maybe Nick Suzuki has a shot" take early in this thread. Jesus Christ.

no worries. not nearly as bad as somebody including Lafreniere on the roster after 10 NHL games. FYI. it wasn't me.

it's all fun and games, though.

We need to talk about getting a spot ready for Sam Girard on defence.

I was guilty of that before he was even drafted!

And you were not the poster I was referring to...so, you were not alone.

The rule I tend to follow is, any Canadian 1OA pick gets put on the B-Team (I keep team rosters A, B, C and D) and then based on 20-25 games, he either moves up to the main roster or down depending on his game. Alexis finds himself currently on the D-team. but I have expectations that he's going to start moving up the depth chart rather quickly here now. He seems to be figuring s%^t out.

i imagine he suffered from a 10 month layoff and then a jump to a much, much better league. It seems like he’s getting some confidence back now. I think he has the skills to be there, and he probably has now like 50 games prior to December to show if he can or not.

Given our forward depth, he’s on the far outside looking in.

Theadore - Pietrangelo
Chabot - Makar
Girard - Doughty
Nurse - Ekblad

With Nurse, Ekblad, and Girard all stepping their game up along with Doughty’s resurgence, the D-core is looking much better than I originally thought.

No way MAF or Blackwood make it over Binnington.
