Palat has been horrible this year to the point where he's a detriment at 5on5. Looked decent in the playoffs, but his regular season was ugly and people outside of Tbay are starting to take notice. He'll survive off his reputation for a while longer I bet.
Yeah and we need to move him while we can still get something back as opposed to having to pay people to take him...lol

Their in deep deep trouble! So many bad contracts... no cap room and Point to resign. Something has to give and I don't think teams will line up for the players being listed on here

Horrible contract, decent 2nd liner
Which is what people pay 5 million for... Do you think point per game players are going for 5 million these days? Career under, ppg player, Tavares, got 11 million in the off season. Now this isn't comparing them, but players get paid. Top talent is getting a lot more than 5 million. So 5 million for secondary / third production is where the NHL is headed. You can look at this contract and say it's bad by comparing it to past contracts, but the NHL economy is different.

What will happen in the league is what has happened to football, baseball, and basketball.

The average players (not saying they suck) who arent going to be hall of famers but who had respectable production like in the 40-50 pr range are going to be replaces with cheaper youth instead of paying them $5M per.

They would keep someone around at $5M if the brought some other niche skill set such as PK or PP specialist, strong draw, phyisical presence, top speed, leadership, etc. we need to keep you because you have something we dont have much of elsewhere on this team.

in football---players when they hit free agency dont get signed and are replaced by draft picks.

In baseball unless the player is a syar and they sign long term., teams trade them and restock. when I was a kid you say baseball players have 15+ yr careers who were no namers outside the team they played for who retire without any chance of hall membership. Its very rare to see these players today.

This will happen in hte NHL where the $5M players will move around on 1-2 yr contracts during free agency rime of their career. some will be left out.

Yes, because that's exactly what we've seen to date so far... teams only giving these guys 1-2 year contracts. That's why Gourde, Johnson, Ladd, Eriksson, Backes and countless others' all signed 1-2 year contracts... right?

Who are all of these bad contracts? All of Johnson/Miller/Gourde are on very reasonable contracts. Palat has a bad year so he’s a bit tougher but has been great in the past.

Not sure the poster understands how the other sports work. NFL if you are worth extending past your rookie deal you’ll get paid well. That contract will take you into age 30. a player will likely move into another team when it comes to contract 3, like Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman, etc. Team has gotten your prime years and don’t risk big money on guys in their 30’s. Especially on positions that depend more on raw physical skill.

MLB, teams are being smarter with contract term for free agents depending on age. Not signing guys past age 35.

NHL, prime years are probably up to 33/34 for most players. Sure some guys from 2003 class will still be going strong, but many have fallen off which is expected. Key for teams going forward will be to only sign guys for their prime years at big money. Once they hit that you need to drop watch how you spend your money on them.

You're a little all over the place here. MLB, NFL, and NHL players are completely different when it comes to contracts, free agency, and their respective CBA's.

A 40-50 point player is not the same as a NFL player who goes unsigned through free agency. The 40-50 point player will always get a new contract. The only was they will only sign for 1-2 years is if they are getting older (moving toward retirement). If they are in their prime, teams will sign them for mid-long term.

The main point is, every team needs these type of players. Would Tampa rather sign Yanni Gourde for 6 years and 5 million to play on the 2nd or 3rd line or go out and attempt to sign a similar player to do the same thing?

For one that is a 0.5 ppg player yes

Take into account All his points are at 5v5 and SH, and he's worth more than 5.

This is why people are so uninformed, they just look at raw numbers and ZERO context.

A 45 5v5 point player at 5.1 mil who also PKs and can play all posistions is easily worth more.

People need to do their research.

Gourde is fine for what he brings. Palat and Callahan are the biggest issues, followed by Killorn, IMO

Palat and Killorn have full ntc. So good luck with those. Killorn will move to mntc in 2020, while Palat drops to mntc in 2021, same as Johnson. Callahan can deal to half the league. I suspect Miller will be the next guy out after Callahan.

dont exactly want him back either hes proven himself to be fairly mediocre at everything. some games is dominant but more often than not you dont notice him

Until he does something extremely dumb.

He's a stupid hockey player. Tools but no toolbox. So glad we dealt him instead of paying him. Not worth the hassle of having him around.
