JT will make his way out of his funk, but he seemingly tries to do that by overworking situations. Several times tonight where he had options to keep the puck moving, and he instead opted to try and fight through tight checking himself. He failed basically every time, and he did it when there was not a lot of upside and low chance to succeed.

He needs to stop thinking with his legs and lean more on his wingers, until he gets back to a level where he can drive his line again.

Yep no one should be surprised Tavares is struggling in this system .. he can’t skate people .. keefe has to put Tavares at wing where he isn’t a liability for us defensively.. shouldn’t had signed him to begin with .. on that note .. I know dubas won’t trade him but Tavares won’t get any faster as he ages .. its gonna be hard to watch this guy make 11 million for the next 5 yeArs .

Another thing too is.. keefe started Tavares ( the captain and leader) to set the tone last night and they scored within 20’seconds and Tavares left to the bench shaking his head .. not ideal leadership

If u are a dad who cares. Having a newborn changes a lot. Specially first months can be tough. If thats the reason he will find his rythm soon.

He is doing his job. Maby not like you want him to, but not near the extent of getting fired.

those commenting on the baby stuff clearly don’t have experience or knowledge of raising and having a new born / toddler in modern times. Absolutely his life has changed. His routine has changed and family demands have increased. He also has new line mates and a new coach. on top of the demands of being the captain. Taking on added responsibilities while being a pro athlete has its challenges. Athletes are still human and are creatures of habit. Call it an adjustment period. He will find his way.

And? Should have no bearing on his game. He is the same player when he arrived here. Slow and getting slower.

Having a baby changes your life. No question.

Having 77m also changes your life. It give him means to do things the regular ppl can't do like arranging for 8 hours of sleep such as hiring a sleep coach or nanny.

Not sure why the baby stuff was brought up, it shouldn't excuse him from not being called out for playing below his contract. If that was the case he should have took less for this built in excuse.

The reason why I find it tough to talk about players domestic lives is it's none of our business and its also their job as professionals to do what they're supposed to do. Would be curious to see who else is a new dad in the NHL and all of a sudden was a shell of his former self. At the end of the day, that's not really going to work as an excuse.

That's also the reason why you can't start Tavares in OT. All the other team needs to do is attack with speed and good things have been shaking out lately.

It’s interesting that your post history is basically 75% negative Tavares posts. You sure you are a Leaf fan? Interesting to join a board and only post negativity.

Hilarious how "realist" is now the term people use to completely ignore all facts and reality in favour of their personal unsubstantiated opinion. :eyeroll:

He hasn't really looked like himself this season. When Keefe took over I saw a glimpse of vintage JT but he just looks so slow out there. I don't know, he had a career year last year so a dip is expected.

Im optimistic and still don't think we have seen the best of John Tavares.

This will end up as bad as the Clarkson and Marleau signings.

This is a 7 year deal, what he did last year means NOTHING going forward. He’s not even PPG this year at a salary of 11 MILLION. Is there any other forward in the league making 11+ mill that isn’t higher than PPG?

He’s atrocious defensively because he can’t skate or keep up with opponents top lines. It’s only year 2 and it’s turning into a terrible contract. Imagine in years 5, 6, 7.

So you're saying we cant even play our 11 million dollar captain in the most offensively friendly scenario possible?

Hes a single point under ppg and is on pace for 35 goals. Conparing him to Clarkson or Marleau is being ridiculous

But he’s also on a 7 year deal. 47 goals to 35 is almost a 25% decline. If that trend continues, his contract becomes negative value as early as next season, year 3 of 7.

I said it will END UP as bad, might just take longer.

The way he’s skating out there in open ice would lead me to think it’s not a great idea.

Unlike the Clarkson and Marleau signings which a lot of Leafs fans called a mistake right away, I don't remember anyone saying that after Tavares was signed.

Many people said it was a luxury signing and that money should of been spent on D. Overall it was a positive vibe when he signed with us.

We all believed he was the final piece to get us over the Boston hurdle. That was obviously false, unfortunately.

I also heard people saying when a player of the caliber of John Tavares is a UFA you do everything possible to sign him, because he wasn't some David Clarkson type of UFA who happen to have 1 career season. Gord Miller said the Tavares signing was the biggest one on July 1 not since Scott Niedermayer went from New Jersey to Anaheim.

The problem is the goals against when he is on the ice. Among centres with at least 500 mins ice time 5-5, only 4 guys in the entire league get scored on more than Tavares this year.
Leafs get scored on 3.65 times per 60 mins 5-5 with Tavares on the ice. Only Draisaitel 3.72, Hertel 3.75 Flipula 4.44 and Zacha 4.72 are worse. Then combine that with the fact that leafs only score 2.74GF60 with Tavares on the ice and you see the problem.

Some comparables on the GA60.

Matthews 2.30
Kerfoot 3.2

Other teams top centres
Courturier 1.98
Pageau 2.02
Kadri 2.09
Kopitar 2.13 on awful team
Point 2.14
Danault 2.46
Pettersson 2.47
Bergeron 2.47
Malkin 2.55
Aho 2.64
Mckinnion 2.92 but his GF is 4.13
Crosby 2.75 (DOESN'T MEET 500 MIN CRITERIA)

Is there any precedent for nhl players having bad years after having a baby?

Im guessing it’s just another made up narrative not supported with any semblance of fact.

Just like with Nylander last year. A completely made up narrative that players are always horrible if the miss camp/beginning of the season. How has that affected Hyman? Lol

JT is a very good hockey player with limited skating skill. But it has always been that way. He knows how to deal with it. But he looks better in a Babs system than a Keefe system. Clearly Keefe likes a fast moving 5 man together up and down the ice type system. Tavares playing with AJ and Willy who are super fast may not be his best linemates. Hyman and Marner are better linemates for him. Lines under Keefe system need to move together. With babs and his stretch system it gave time to Tavares to catchup to the play. With Keefe he is always coming back late in his own end and getting to party late in offensive end. Once he gets there he is great. But this has always been the issue with tavares in junior and with Isles. He is not all of a sudden losing speed. He never had it to begin with.

The problem is people using GA to judge players, without looking at the context behind it.

Yes, Tavares is 5th last in GA/60 among centers at 5v5 with 500+ minutes.
The reason for this is that Tavares is 5th last in on ice save percentage among centers at 5v5 with 500+ minutes.

Tavares is a positive at literally everything other than GA. Positive CF%, FF%, SF%, xGF%, SCF%, HDCF%. Goaltending has been letting him down while he is on the ice.
