What would the NYI want from the Leafs for a package consisting of rights to Tavares (so we can sign him to 8 years) and Calvin de Haan.

First round pick in 2018, Matt Martin and ?

Calvin de Haan will be available for no assets on July 1st.

Tavares can't sign a 8 year deal with anyone other than the Isles.

If we know for a fact that JT is leaving by the draft date (which I still don't think we will), then I'd go for it.

JT might be just wanting to test and see what the market can handle and use that as leverage to sign back with the Isles. If that's the case, we (Isles) are getting nothing.

Leafs wouldn't be able to sign him for 8 years. Youd need to arrange for a sign then trade for that to happen.

How could the Leafs afford Tavares, Matthews, Marner, and Nylander and still be able to sign a good defender or two?

Tavares and Matthews both get 9.5 x 8.

Marner signs for 6.5 x8

Nylander signs 4.2 x 3

all four for less than 30 million.

I think you may be a bit shocked by the actual cap hit put on each player. I'd be willing to bet Nylander at least gets 6 with term. JT and Matthews will be above 10 unless they take a discount.

JT to Toronto isn't exactly a smart move for TOR. Their offense is fine, it's the defense or at least defensive systems that could use a bit of work.

If I am snow and can't sign Tavares, I would tell teams if they give Tavares an 8 year deal I will sign him then trade him to them for a 2019 first

market value for matthews and JT is probably 10 million. Endorsements will more than make up for 500k discount. Canadian Tire and Scotiabank will be fully utilized at the contract meetings. I'm ok with N ylander at six million for term, but I think they will give him a show me contract for cap flexibility in the short term.

That makes sense, because we have never seen that type of deal before.

Taverns may as well wait until UFA , he's already there.

If he doesn't resign with the isle, they aren't getting any 1st round pick LOL.

1) Has Tavares or his rep contacted the isles, telling them telling them Tavares will not be back? Because the isles have put all their eggs in the loyalty gamble and it makes little sense to move Tavares at this point, unless he tells them he is definitely leaving.

2) No interest, none, in the slow skating Martin. With or without salary retention, Johnston fills his role nicely at $666,000.

3). Will likely move CDH's rights for a 4th on draft weekend.

If somebody is a team wanting to sign Tavares and an 8th year makes all the difference, a first rounder is nothing(only the Islanders can sign him to a 8 year deal before July 1). Now if they can get Tavares to sign a 7 year deal then no Islanders won't be able to get anything

It's basically the one advantage Islanders have over other teams, they have the ability to sign him to 8 years vs 7 years and I am guessing that can be parlayed into something if the Islanders don't sign him

Uhhh, Doughty isn't taking $9 million.

Wishful thinking here, based off a bunch of discounts.

rights to JVR Bozak Komarov
Since JVR has already rejected the chance to join the nyi and sign an extension, I am gonna guess the isles pass on that one

Also, will go out on a limb and say neither Bozak or Komarov's rights hold a lot of appeal.
Toronto can keeps it's impending ufas rights, while the nyi keep it's impending ufas rights.

Hasn't he already said he and Karlsson deserved considerably more then Subban's $9m?

Oh let me guess...he will leave millions per season on the table,to play in Toronto?

Tavares would've needed to be on the Maple Leafs roster before the TDL for them to be able to offer him 8 years. Nobody other than the Isles can give Tavares that extra year.

Islanders can sign him to a 8 year deal before July 1 then trade him to another team. I am guessing most people who refer to signing Tavares to 8 years would assume this is how it will work

Apparently not, given the premise of this thread. :dunno:
