love goncalves. now that we're a few months into the season, how would you guys say the prospect top 10 is shaking out? impressed with what i've seen of colton. a lot of these
TB kids seems like under the radar guys that will play (similar to boston).
I'll leave out our top 2 picks from 2020 in Jack Finley and Gage Goncalves just because they've played so little. But here's a top 10 in no order:
Ross Colton
Alex Barre-Boulet
Hugo Alnefelt
Max Cajkovic
Gabriel Fortier
Nick Perbix
Sammy Walker
Boris Katchouk
Taylor Raddysh
Max Groshev
Ross Colton - 4th rd/2016
He had a good season last year and followed it up with a positive showing in the training camp scrimmages back in January. He earned a look with the big team and made the most out of it. Relentless and hard working player, but also showing some of his offensive abilities as well. He should be a lock for a roster spot in 2021-22.
Alex Barre-Boulet - undrafted
Like Colton, he looked good in the scrimmages against NHL players and had some good moments in his few NHL games. Unlike Colton though, ABB had to answer some questions about where the rest of his game is at. We all know how good he is offensively with the puck on his stick, so it was good to see that there's been great improvement in other areas. He's another guy that should be in line for a roster spot next season.
Hugo Alnefelt - 3rd rd/2019
If I ranked the top 10, he'd probably be closer to 10 than #1. Terrific 18 year old season in the SHL and World Juniors. Not so great follow up as a 19 year old. We know what he's capable of, which is why he's still one of the better prospects in the organization, but 2021-22 will be important to see which way he trends.
Max Cajkovic - 3rd rd/2019
He's having a good year for the most part. Injuries troubled him in 2019-20, but he's been pretty healthy this season. The biggest stain on his season is how he was kicked off the Slovakian national junior team right before the WJC. He's a player with a reputation and it's becoming more of a pattern, and that's an issue. He's a skilled forward, but the Lightning put high value on character, so who knows what his future holds.
Gabriel Fortier - 2nd rd/2018
Undersized, speedy, highly competitive, high iq, he's a Tampa Bay Lightning prospect alright. Drafted more for his floor than his ceiling or offensive potential, he's the kind of prospect that other organizations may under value, but he fits the mold here with the Lightning. 6 points already in the AHL is a nice start to his pro career too.
Nick Perbix - 6th rd/2017
Fortier is to forwards in this organization, as Perbix is to dmen. Bolts love a big blueliner with mobility. Perbix had a rocky soph. season when his responsibilities were increased but adapted to make big strides as a junior. 20 points in 27 games in great, but it's also good to hear about him taking on a little bit of a leadership role as well.
Sammy Walker - 7th rd/2017
He had a great year with Minnesota, and helped lead his team to a conference championship. It's hard to find anything not to like about his game, offensively or defensively. Like Fortier, for some that may be his size, but that's not a negative over here.
Boris Katchouk & Taylor Raddysh - 2nd rd/2016
Great OHL players, but not as of great AHL players. These guys were impact players in junior, but still haven't replicated that kind of success at the professional level. They are top 6 players for Syracuse, but the future is uncertain for both guys if either one of them can make it to the NHL.
Max Groshev - 3rd rd/2020
35 KHL games, 2 different men's national team appearances, and a 3rd with the World Junior team is a solid season of experience for a teenager during these times. There's a lot to like about his natural abilities, even if the offensive numbers haven't been there. While the Bolts are stocked with sub 6 foot forwards, Groshev's 6'2" 200 frame and possible power forward skillset make him a valuable prospect to the Bolts.
