Powell led all rookies at plus-15 during the regular season and hasn't had a minus rating in a contest since the second game of the season. The defenseman led all first-year blueliners in both assists (11) and points (13).

Crunch win 3-0

The University of Minnesota Duluth started postseason play tonight in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff against a red-hot Western Michigan University team. The Bulldogs willed their way past the Broncos in overtime, 5-4, in what was a roller coaster of a quarterfinal. The Bulldogs have won 13 straight postseason games, going back to the start of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. UMD improves to 14-9-2 on the year and advances to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff semifinal against St. Cloud State University.

The NCAA playoffs are worth keeping an eye on, as matriculated players are getting ATOs with AHL and ECHL teams much earlier in the pro season.

The college free agent season is already starting.

edit: at the moment, Notre Dame is playing. In goal is Dylan St. Cyr. Manon Rheaume's son.
Brady Bjork is also Erik Condra's cousin.

Tuning in to watch Minnesota and Sammy Walker. First minute of the broadcast and the commentators are already heaping praise at Walker. Said hes an elite player and that when he’s going he makes them a “National championship type team.”

This is the tail end of Walker's junior year, and he's had pretty consistent stats, but there's not a lot of time left.

Walker's first two years were 37 games, so if he continued his production over that length of a season this year, he'd be on pace for 35.6 pts. Another 5 pt improvement on last year.

Things have not gone Minnesota’s way through about 2 periods. Michigan State leads 1-0 thanks to a pp goal but they’ve kept it that way by blocking a ton of shots and eliminating high scoring chances for the much more skilled Gophers. Looks like Minnesota might be without Brock Faber the rest of the game too, who is up for big ten dman of the year.

According to the commentators, a #7 seed in this big ten tournament has never won a game. They’re 20 minutes away from that possible upset

Hockey East had a 7-2 upset like an hour ago with Lowell beating Boston University.

Big 10 hockey also only started in 2013-14 though.

I think what does it is that quarterfinals are supposed to be best of 3, which tilts the board much more.

With a minute left Walker dekes out his defender and cut to the net but the puck is pokechecked by the goalie.

Going to OT now

UNH is hanging in there against BC. Down 2-3 after two. That's a 9-1 matchup.

UConn looks cooked. Down 5-1 against Providence. Capone's freshman season seems like it's going to end, while Crozier's stays alive at least until Wednesday.

Orlando traded a forward today for future considerations. Given the timing, and no corresponding move, I've got to think that it's to accommodate taking an NCAA player.

OSB's second goalie, Michael Lackey also got a PTO with Hartford. There's no shortage of ECHL goalies sitting around right now, but they could go with an ATO on one of these college goalies as well, although I think that's less likely.

I can see us signing a bunch of our NCAA guys this year. I believe 5 guys are ending their junior year and we seem to be having guys sign before they go into their senior year if we really like the player. We only have Goncalves, Huntington and Fortier as guys who have a contract next year that'll be in Syracuse. Finlay will be back in junior and I can see Lipanov being mutually terminated this summer as the two others with a contract. Raddysh, Katchouk, Colton, Barre-Boulet and Sommpi are RFA who should be signed but all become waiver eligible next year so we probably want to try to keep most away from waivers.

I think we could definitely use Guttman, Walker and Koepke to our forward core and Perbix on the back end. I would also sign Cajkovic. We have to sign Schmeimann before the draft this year so we have to see how he does in the dub when it starts back up, we may need a LD if Masin doesn't come back and we don't resign Day. Not sure what the deal with Dureau is since he's 20 so this should be his last year of junior but we don't have to sign him till 22, so not sure what league he'll play in next year? The lightning may lose a lot of guys through being let walk in free agency, expansion and trade so there's a lot of spots open. The NCAA kids will be 22 or more so adding 5 rookies isn't that bad since they've matured already and should be ready to contribute.
