UEFA thanking german and french teams who rejected the idea. Blames the persistence of some teams of looking only at their own personnal interestes and that they've had enough.

Now EPL rejects the idea.

This is getting major here. 3 of the 4 semis finalists could be ejected from this year's CL making the Bayern/PSG matchup the real final (which it was IMO). Leicester could get the EPL title. And Sevilla in Spain. Atalanta in Italy.

It's a farce that these teams want to create their own closed shop breakaway league and assume they can strong arm everyone into continuing the domestic leagues like nothing has changed.

I hope UEFA, the PL, etc. bring the hammer down.

It’s basically just rich teams not wanting to cement their financial advantage over others so new investors don’t upset the current economic power structure.

Of course, it is. Football teams have historically been very poor investments because failure leads to revenue drying up in practical terms. And there's no way to guarantee protection from failure within the traditional structure of football. You can't totally ensure that Arsenal and Chelsea will finish in the top 4 every year. The American 'closed club' sports structure makes it much easier to be a 'bad owner' and still collect money even during the lean times - and if things go really wrong, to make big money by selling the team.

It’ll fold when Fifa gets involved & threatens the players with bans from international tournaments, I think

Just trying to get the lay of the land here. This would happen as soon as this season? If the teams do not withdraw their intent they would lose out on their titles and spots in Europe, etc?

It's implied but not said.
But let's say those teams continue. Do you think UEFA can handle the CL winner to bail out? Or the EPL to have a top 2 teams who will leave it? Instant measures would be taken.

Lay down the hammer and make it so that any player representing those clubs are banned from ALL UEFA competitions, including the EUROs. That ought to put this shit to bed.

There's no way they could start play in this league for 21/22. Not with those 12 teams. They clearly want this out in public to either pressure UEFA into an amenable solution within UEFA framework and if that doesn't work, to essentially put pressure on other candidate clubs who now could be afraid of being left out.

I hope they ban these teams from f***ing everything. Hopefully this scam doesn't actually come to pass. Terrible concept from the beginning and having my team be part of this idea is embarrassing. Pathetic

Players will probably have the opportunity to transfer this summer. Because they didn't sign for this.

As I have said many times, the current C1 format is awful.
A semi-closed league would make sense (essentially a top 20 european team, but with teams being relegated and promoted from national leagues). Or go back to the original format (1 country, 1 team), but that ship as sailed.
However, a CLOSED league, with mid table teams like Arsenal, is absolutely not a good thing.

Seems several national football associations have also said players taking part in this would be banned from national teams. Players associations are against it as well.

So, they want to do a champions-ier champions league with some teams who are always in it regardless of how worthy they are to be there?

Europa League is more interesting these days TBH, so I guess making a third league for these super teams and having 2 below it wouldn't actually be a bad thing.
