If they aren't qualifying Lokti, how is he going to play on the top line with Staal, and save our powerplay?

Meh..minor issue at best. Not even in the top 100 concerns for the Canes so not sure why the outrage.

No outrage here, just thought it was funny that he was kept when he's been so meh. If his name wasn't Staal, he'd be gone years ago.

If we pencil in Tlusty at at least 2M, that's <10M on 3-4 forwards and a defenseman. Boychuk and/or Terry could take up a few of those, but that's still not much room. Especially if they spend to a budget instead of the cap.

Also I do wonder if there is still a way to get Ward to Buffalo. They HAVE to get up to the cap floor somehow. They didn't even qualify some of their RFA's.

I'm pretty sure there are/have been ways to move Ward. they don't want to....

anyway, Calgary is letting go of a guy named Paul Byron whom I've watched and have been impressed by. there are many options to improve the team out there. many guys who would make the 3rd and 4th lines a lot better and the team vastly more competitive. there really are no excuses. defense too.

Thank god JR got rid of Ruutu and was able to swap Liles for Gleason (only small help this year, but much more in Salary next year) or the team would be in even bigger trouble.

Remember, he also picked up a 3rd in 2017 for Ruutu, even though he retained salary. With or without Loktionov, it was still a pretty savvy move.

If they play to the cap, there's still a ton of different ways to field a competitive team, though the pressure is really on Boychuk in almost every scenario.

Maybe, maybe not. But the defensive pool got a little more deeper, and the cap is lower than expected. Engelland can easily be dropped and a million added somewhere in there. The point is, there are options, but only if they don't set some arbitrary cap like 65M.

Maybe we can catch the Sabres with their pants down and they'll have to take Ward or Liles to get up to the cap in mid-September.

So drop Gilbert entirely.

But teams have an average of around ~3M cap space to spend per opening, and that's not including teams who will willingly spend lower. Then there's another group who will break the bank on guys like Vanek and have less left over for depth moves.

There's just not enough room to go around for all of these guys to make 3M+.

I just think Fayne may have been a bad example because he's a young guy with some upside remaining and is already a competent defender. The Devils didn't want to lose him. With the very weak crop of defensive defenseman this year, especially those with a modicum of mobility, he's going to get paid. It wouldn't shock me to see him get one of those contracts where people go "LOL him for that much at that term?"
