I am surprised to read that Strome came in training camp over confident. His older brother is an NHL player so you would expect them to have discussed how to make a NHL team, no?

Then again Ryan Strome's career has been flat out disappointing so...

Anyway glad to read that Dylan is reacting well to his demotion. Let's hope this attitude survives the test of time.

The key difference here: McDavid, Eichel, Marner and Hanifin all are still in the NHL. Strome isn’t.

Not only are these 4 guys in the NHL, they are all EXCELLING in the NHL. McDavid and Eichel are the best players on their respective teams. Marner is the 2nd or 3rd best player on his team. Noah Hanifin leads Carolina Defensemen in points.

This doesn't mean that he won't be a good NHL player at some point. What this does mean is that he's lagging far behind the rest of his draft class. That puts an enormous amount of extra pressure on him.

If Dylan Strome had been picked 8th or 9th overall, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Being picked 3rd in that particular draft class adds to the frustration of Arizona fans and especially Dylan strome himself.

Moreover, he must concentrate on his own game — and not of those from his draft class who are up in the pros right now.

That is so true!!! I really hope for his sake he can do just that!

Less worried about Strome than our handling of our prospects including him.

Strome named as Captain of 2017 Canadian WJC team....following in the steps of another great Coyote 1C, Kyle Chipchura!

Good for Strome. Big opportunity for him being the face of the Team Canada when they're playing at home. He has a chance to be the most popular player in the country for a 3 week period.

... or the opposite. Remember how popular Stephon Marbury and Allen Iverson were leading USA basketball to not-gold in 2004 Olympics? Lot of pressure on the kid. Thankfully he's been there last year. Hopefully he thrives under it.

Yeah there's a lot of pressure. Which is what makes it a great opportunity. I think the WJC was a huge part in Domi's development. Hoping Strome will recreate that. Playing in the same 2 cities.

I think these tournaments are for the fans, otherwise useless.

I completely disagree. WJC has been the coming out party for so many players. Jarome Iginla's play made him the targetted asset for 50 goal scorer and first line Center Joe Nieuwendyk. Ederle secured a place in history with his clutch goals. The 2005 Canadian World Junior allowed 9 goals in a tournament and were likely the best collection of talent on a team. So many stories. The WJC is some of the best hockey you will ever see. Every kid in Canada spends their Xmas vacation watching this tournament. I can't oversell the amount of attention paid to this event.

Not just kids, everyone. It's become a huge Christmas tradition in the country, the players on the team are the most popular people in the country for the 3 or so weeks the tournament is on. Especially when the tournament is in Canada.

And Eberle's a great example of success in the tournament translating to the NHL. Drafted 20something, dominated the WJs and then made a smooth transition into the NHL.

You'd have to think any tournament with that much draft eligible talent is going to heavily scouted too. Far from useless.

U20's does provide some top tier draft insight on non team Canada/team USA prospects (usually); however it's mainly a prospect draft. U18's is better from that perspective.

Interesting that Canada only has 1 guy who hasn't been drafted yet. Same with USA.

On the flip side, there are plenty of Finnish players, particularly D, expected to go in Round 1. A lot of Swedish forwards too. And Nico Hischier (Swiss) and Martin Necas (Czech).

It's pretty normal. It's a U20 tournament, so unless you're special like McDavid, Laine, Matthews, Eichel, a 19 year old will be better than a 17 year old.

I agree this is a very important tournament, getting even more important year after year as it is becoming more and more competitive.

The coming out party of one Patrik Laine for example.

Dylan Strome scored 2 goals today in Canada's opening day win over Russia. That is an encouraging start for him.

Strome looks like a player that needs good linemates to be really successful. I'm not sure he will be a player that can have high sucess on his own but can be a very good player with the right combination. He can pass and shoot but I'm not sure he can carry the play alone if that makes sense??

I agree with this to an extent. He certainly can't carry the play in transition. That's neither his style nor something that his current abilities afford.

He can make plays in the defensive zone that lead to turnovers, though, and in the offensive zone, his brilliant passing ability make him an excellent possession center. It just involves cycling the puck rather than keeping it on his stick.

As for linemates, I think he needs certain kinds of linemates. Namely, a strong boards-and-corners guy like he has with Raddysh in Erie and Dubois on Team Canada (Crouse or Fischer should be able to fill this role just fine) and someone who can move the puck well through the neutral zone and make a clean zone entry (Domi or Duclair fit the bill nicely). It'll be great if one of those linemates is a strong triggerman, too, especially if Strome continues to struggle with getting his own shot off quickly.

Strome has a big shot. He seems to rely too often on the long wind up and release wrister where he extends his arms/stick way behind him. In the OHL it works well and often. It does not work in the faster pro game (nor the WJHC). That is a big part of his learning curve. Playing faster. Like his second goal yesterday.

I do think he has become the whipping boy on HF and will be heavily/unfairly scrutinized/criticized during the World Juniors. I read comments stating all he had was a big wrist shot and was nothing but a PP specialist. Yet he probably made 20+ excellent passes in the game against Russia. Perfect touch. Great vision. And no mention of the terrific back check in the first when it was 0 - 0.

As I mentioned earlier, I still am concerned about his quickness - both skating and decision making. The skating / moving his feet is improving. The decision making is him learning what he can and cant do at the higher levels.
