Hopefully he's claimed, but I can see this move as similar to Scott's waives, where it gives Maloney the flexibility to demote him if needed.

yeah, I agree. I think DM will have all his trades done before TTD.

Agreed. They could have been trying to show case Downie by playing him yesterday instead of Tik. Maybe Downie did something dumb yesterday too. If he clears, or should I say when, this could send a message and inspire his play if we have injuries moving forward. A team like the Oilers could use him though.

I hope someone claims him too
I liked his effort and his aggressiveness..
He handled and passed the puck well and on those rare occasions that a Yote was around the crease in getting rebounds in front of the net...he was there.

Oilers just traded for Kassian, so I don't think they want Downie.

I hope someone claims him as well. Sure, he isn't too spectacular on our team, but that's mainly because we have several players who play a similar "hard-nosed" (to different degrees) game (Chip, Gordon, Tikhonov, Doan, Richardson, Martinook, and Hanzal). I could see a team pick him up. He's not too expensive (for the rest of the season) and could be a good addition to a team facing a number of injuries or needing a more physical player to make a run for (and during) the playoffs.

Downie is still a good player. The problem is the guy can't fart out on the ice without getting 2 minutes called for it.

Well, he didn't get a penalty in the last game and played 7 minutes

Nor did he get penalties in the following games:
12/22 (7:52 TOI), 12/17 (8:44), 12/11 (9:42), 12/8 (13:07), 12/6 (14:42), 12/3 (12:28), 11/9 (5:33), 11/7 (7:56), 11/5 (6:02), 10/30 (10:00), 10/24 (7:00), 10/22 (13:56), 10/20 (5:52), 10/17 (6:06), 10/14 (12:25), 10/9 (14:40)

So, out of 25 Games played, he was called for penalties in 8 of them. Of course he did receive some big penalties in a few of those, but still, he could be a solid 4th/3rd liner, especially with a team that has a strong goalie, offensive players, and a decent PK unit

Wouldn't expect him to get claimed, but maybe there's a team out there with some injury issues that could use a fill-in.

If nothing else it at least gives the team flexibility like waiving Scott regularly did. They're at 23 players on the active roster.

Just thinking: Clears waivers, demoted, and gets traded to a playoff bound team for young pending RFA AHL fodder needing a change? Then that team could have him on stand by for playoff grit or inevitable injury call up.

DM picked him up for his toughness and ability to score a few goals. Instead, he has taken too many dumb penalties and never added much in the way of scoring. Also, Martinook, Tik, and Chip have stepped up and are much better all over the ice, so Downie is not needed. I hope he gets claimed, but doubt it.

Hope someone claims him but doubt anyone will.

He was never really a good fit here. Some of that was probably his reputation around the league to where Jules Winnfield put it best that he can't even fart on the ice without getting a 2-minute penalty.

I don't see anyone claiming him. Perhaps we can retain 50% for the remaining half of the season and hand him over to another team. (1750000*(38/82))*.50 = $405,487 salary with 50% retained assuming 38 games remaining.

The good news is next season his $1.75 million can be spent on other players.

You can only retain on three contracts at a time. We're already retaining on Yandle. I might save it in case Boedker won't sign and Doan asks for a Cup run.

I'm not too worried about it. Scott barely played and didn't make much of an impact when he did, and Downie is more of a pest/instigator than an enforcer (who has already missed plenty of games this year himself). The Coyotes don't seem to be getting pushed around anyway, and I'd imagine Tinordi can add a little bit of that as well.

Not that Scott dressed often but with him gone and if someone picks up Downie will the team be in danger of getting pushed around a bit?

That's why they got Tinordi.

But yes, it is kind of dispiriting that the Coyotes have once again fallen into the cycle of signing goons and pests and then giving up on them halfway through the season.
