MN
Minnesota kind of makes sense, doesn't it?
No, we are overloaded with crap Centers as is. Thanks for thinking of us, though.

I mean, at a cap hit of 6.5M, but only 2M actual salary, isn't he a Melnyk wet dream?

Maybe he can meet them halfway, in Nsh: something around Stepan + J.Brown for Haula + Boro
Or if he insists on landing in the West division, how about the wild fantasy of Stepan & Hog for Jonathan Quick @ 50%. Quick's actual salary over the next couple years is Melnykable, Ottawa would have 4 cups' worth of experience minding their net

Sad how far he’s fallen. He was a very valuable player for the Rangers for a bunch of years.

Skating was always a flaw but one he could get away with. Now it hurts to watch him stride and get up and down the ice.

His athleticism and physical ability diminished as much and as rapidly as his hair did

Some guys I would gauge value on... fans of the teams, tell me if you would add to them for Stepan, need more with Stepan to deal them, if retention is required, if you'd have interest in Coburn or Reilly, or just wouldnt trade at all... my brief thoughts below each player

Andrew Shaw - CHI (3.9 x 2)
- pretty even with retention
Calvin De Haan - CHI (4.55 x 2)
- pretty even with retention + Reilly/Coburn; maybe a small + from CHI
Andrew Cogliano - DAL (3.25 x 1)
- takes a + from Ottawa, unsure if DAL entertains
Leo Komarov - NYI (3.0 x 2)
- close to even with retention, + from NYI?
Andrew Ladd - NYI (5.5 x 3)
- Big + from NYI
Ryan Getzlaf - ANA (8.25 x 1)
- Big + from Ottawa, unsure if ANA entertains
Jason Zucker - PIT (5.5 x 3)
- Big + from Ottawa and full retention; unsure if PIT has any interest in moving on from Zucker
Jason Demers - AZ (3.9 x 1)
- Full retention from Ottawa, + from Ottawa
Victor Rask - MIN (4.1 x 2)
- Full retention from Ottawa, reasonable sized + from MIN
JT Compher - COL (3.5 x 3)
- Full retention on Stepan, pretty even.
Kyle Okposo - BUF (6 x 3)
- Semi significant + from BUF
Brendan Smith - NYR (4.35 x 1)
- Retention on Stepan, Reilly/Coburn sent in addition, small + from NYR
Jake Gardiner - CAR (4.05 x 3)
Ryan Dzingel - CAR (3.375 x 1)
- I think there could be a deal around Stepan + Reilly for these two. Probably some retention and/or a small + from Ottawa
Brett Connolly - FLA (3 x 3.5)
- Retention and small + from Ottawa
Darren Helm - DET (1 x 3.85)
- Retention from Ottawa

Even with retention at 50% how many clubs want 3.25 million on the cap for Stepan and have to give up an asset. Most teams don’t even have that cap space either.

For the reasons you have mentioned in your post, this is why it was a bad deal that should have never been made in the first place. I wouldn't sink deeper into this quagmire by adding more now to get rid of him. Senators might have to ride this out until the TDL and see if they can get something (whatever) back.

Sanderson and Chabot is not enough. Need two more solid guys in that mix. Then you need to find some centers. Goalies are not that hard to acquire and not sure Murry is your guy. I think the Sens will be better in 2+ years but how much better depends on how your latest picks do and the ones to come.

Lots of work required yet. But you got some decent pieces to build around. I think you guys should be shooting for more lottery picks. You do have two 2nd's in the next two drafts which could get you some more hits.

You forgot Brannstrom who just played 2 great games against the Habs. Chabot/Sanderson/Brannstrom seems pretty damn good as a top 3 D. Lots of other prospects in the system that can potentially fill in the last top 4 spot, the front-runner being Bernard-Docker.

If Logan Brown plays like he has in the AHL and can be more consistent in the NHL, the centers are all set too with Stutzle/L.Brown/Norris/White and Pinto coming next year.

The Sens could've sucked this year but in a fun way. A young, rebuilding, we are figuring this out kind of way.

They had a GREAT farm team in Binghamton Belleville with lots of seasoned prospects with very little left to prove in the AHL. They could have really started to saturate their team with these guys - all proven at lower levels, all with a lot of continuity from time together in the AHL. Maybe one or two additions - but start seeing what these older prospects have at the NHL level. There will be ups and downs but you roll with it knowing you are building something.

Instead the Sens went out and got: Alex Galchenyuk, who is both a bad player and not even used. Micheal Haley to goon things up. Both Austin Watson and Cedric Paquette...for reasons. The rotting and expensive corpse of Derek Stepan. The holy trinity of defensive pylons in Erik Gudbranson, Josh Brown and Brayden Coburn. And yes, guys like Anisimov STILL on the team.

Meanwhile Colin White, who they've invested heavily in - is in and out of the line-up. Logan Brown and Brannstrom still can't even get NHL ice time and it's hard to tell at this point if they are amazing prospects getting completely shafted or just not good enough to beat out a bunch of grinders and retreads. And guys like Chlapik, Zub, Balcers, Jaros, etc - not world beaters but younger cheap guys who you might want to see more of at the NHL level - either not playing or lost because the GM went crazy collecting as many useless one-way contracts as he could in the off-season.

There was this very, very faulty logic at the time that the Sens were going to be able to turn all these signings into draft pick gold. Galchenyuk was going to get them a 2nd or 3rd rounder scoring at a 50 point pace even though he's a player a contending team wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole. Stepan was going to get more than he cost at the TDL because...well...for some reason he just was. All these guys...the Sens can just trade them away for picks so it's just free money.

Except that it's not. And now the Sens are both bad and almost unbearable to watch outside of the Stutzle show. And nobody wanted these guys (much if at all) this off-season and they are going to be wanted even less now. The Sens will probably be fine in the long-run...they have too much prospect and draft capital...unless Dorion and Smith simply spend the summer of 2021 repeating this exact same process which you can't put it past them.
Good post. And, if there was ever a year to take advantage of (COVID) market conditions, it was this year. Many teams were facing a cap crunch, and lots of free agents were taking low cost, 1 year deals. Like you said, give the prospects some NHL game experience, take advantage of 2 or 3 (whatever) cap strapped teams, keep your picks, and see what you have. This wasn't going to be a big year anyhow, so stay patient and keep focused on the rebuild. As they say, patience is a virtue.

50% retained for Chiasson and Turris
Senators already have lots of ineffective (bad), older players. Turris has 2 years on his contract. And his salary next year ($2.2 m) is higher than his cap hit ($1.65 m).

Ottawa just needs to ride it out and take whatever they can get at the deadline. Sinking deeper into this quagmire will ultimately make things worse. No idea why there's such infatuation (from Sens fans) for these junk level (bottom of the roster) trades.
