I see a solid core. and hope the injury bug leaves over the offseason, but I think for the Avs to get competitive by opening day, they need to get to work now. Here's my hope for 2013-14, I'd love to hear yours.

FIRE SACCO AND HIRE EXPERIENCED NHL COACH!!!!

1???????-Duchene- Parenteau
Ladeskog-Stastny-2????????
McGinn-O'Reilly-Downie
McCleod-Mitchell-3???????
Bordeleau-Olver(cheap and can play all forward positions)

4????????-Johnson
Hejda-Barrie
Wilson-Elliot
Zanon

1=Need to sign a UFA top 6 LW to complement Dutch and PAP in offseason.
2=Could be Jones (rather he gets traded) if he shows consistency this year, but a guy like Sgarbossa or FA could slot here.
3=Any of our younger talent, or a PK specialist FA
4=A #1/2 Defenseman FA or via trade (Jones+ or Stazz/ROR moving Mitchell to 3C and Sgarbossa to 4C)

Get ROR in for 4-4.2M over 5+yrs. Worth it IMO even as a 3rd scoring line/ pk and defense center for a year until Stazz leaves UFA or resigns cheaper. Can always trade Stazz by next deadline.
Dump O'Brien,O'Byrne(by trade deadline),Zanon/Hunwick or both(Hunny probably would be more sought after) for whatever PK guys/prospect/picks we can.

If we pair Landeskog with Stastny, I believe they will become our #1 line due to defensive strength. I also believe if Landeskog and Stastny are playing together, O'Reilly is no longer with the team. Take that for what you will...

It's too soon to speculate on next year's roster, we have a lot of potential moves and needs to be met.

But the clear needs are a RW for Stastny and a LD for EJ. Both holes need to be filled asap.

I keep Duchene, Lando, Parenteau, McGinn possibly EJ, Barrie, Elliot, and Varlamov.

Past that, everyone is expendable. I'm not going to write in a bunch of these pilons for years down the road. If they're stil with the organization that long, we are in for a really long decade.

Move McCleod (vet that won't see this rebuild through), Giguere (unless he wants to say and babysit kids), O'Byrne (like him but he's actually maybe got value), and Stastny (unless he's willing to sign for $3M-$4M, which he won't.).....May even move Hejda, although I think you have to keep at least 1 of Hejda/O'Byrne.

All these other guys on the roster are filler to me. The main problem I see with the Avs right now is that we need guys on minimum contracts that are going to contribute. Sure it's been nice to have Lando, Duchene, and ROR come up so quickly. But we have no guys outside of that, and their quick ascension, although impressive, shows a glaring problem. This organization has absolutely zero depth in the minors as far as talent goes. I'd be moving a lot of these guys on the current roster for mid round picks if it was me. We need to get rid of having guys like Kobasew and SOB on the roster, especially above min salaries.

I still don't think we'll do anything significant this year. Trade Jones for a late 1st or 2nd if we can. I think a team like Pittsburgh would take Jones at the deadline for a 1st if he has say 10 goals at that point.

I don't think our team is all that bad right now. I strongly believe if we had Landy, Oreilly, Downie back on offense we'd be 7-3 or 6-4 right now, and a playoff team.

Were definitely lacking on Defense though. We had one Top pairing/Borderline #1 guy in EJ, then a #4 in Wilson, and after that we have a bunch of #6/7 guys. Hejda is probably a #4/5 actually but Obyrne/Hunny/Obrien/Zanon are all 6/7s.

Sign an offensive vet like Streit for 2-3 years to play with EJ. That would really help with his development I think and would really help our defense.

Stay the course this year, keep our first and maybe pick up another first from Jones. Assuming our Pick is in the 7-10 range we take Shinkaruk/Nichushkin/Ristolainen/Nurse with our pick( Or if by some fluke chance one of Barkov/Drouin/Lindholm fall we take them). Then if we get another pick in the late teens or early 20's we take Lazar/Klimchuk/Pullock/Morrisey.

Barrie isn't ready for top 4 duties. If hes in our top 4, we still aren't going anywhere. I'm a huge supporter of his, but nothing has shown he can handle that duty. He'd need sheltered minutes, and with Hunwick there as well it just wouldn't happen. One of the other would have to play minutes they shouldn't be getting.

Streit won't leave the Islanders, not for the Avs at least. I'm starting to think these injuries are a blessing in disguise though. With them out it shows how horrid our defense really is, hopefully it will be addressed now. The power through numbers worked last year when we had a healthy team, so I guess Sherman saw no need to change it.

Gotta give to get, maybe its 3rd pick and we don't get Jones, we need defence we have all the forwards we need, Kulemin is a good depth player, and we get two top 4 dmen

I disagree.

I would draft BPA with the top-5 and trade Stastny/O'Reilly at the draft for defensive help.

At the trade deadline :
* Traded David Jones at the deadline for the highest pick we can get.
* Traded Ryan O'Byrne at the deadline for the highest pick we can get.
* Ryan O'Reilly signed for $3,750,000.
* Traded Paul Stastny & Michael Sgarbossa (Yeah I know... but we have to add something attractive to Stastny in order to get Yandle.)
* Keith Yandle acquired

Off Season :
* Greg Zanon bought out.
* Nathan Horton signed as free agent for $5,000,000. (Hey I can dream, but you get the idea. It's not impossible that he leaves Boston in order to get the raise he deserves. I would go as high as 5.5M)
* Tyler Bozak signed as free agent for $3,500,000. (Perfect third line center, and strong connection to Denver.)
* Clarke MacArthur signed as free agent for $2,000,000. (They are familiar with each-other and C MaC is a good third line LW with some 20 goal upside. Our third line wingers could fill in top 6 roles if there are injuries.)
* Chuck Kobasew signed as free agent for $900,000. (Yes, I resigned him. He kills penalties and has some chemistry with Mitchell.)

Continue to develop Barrie, Elliott, Siemens and Gaunce to be #3-#6/7 defenders in order to replace Hejda and move Wilson down to the third pairing at some point.

We are going to have to overpay for free agents.

Who would you go after? Like I said I want a long term solution, not short term.

There's overpaying free agents and then there's that. Almost $6M/yr for Hainsey?

Is a 32 year old Hainsey for $5.8M/yr a long term solution?

I disagree.

I would draft BPA with the top-5 and trade Stastny/O'Reilly at the draft for defensive help.

I disagree with this, there comes a point in time when you have to address needs, not just go with best players available. I don't know if I'd like to draft Seth Jones, shoots right and we have that big #1 right handed d-man, Erik Johnson, and then I would not want MacKinnon because what role is left for O'Reilly or Stastny? He surely isn't a 3rd line centre yet neither are Stastny or O'Reilly, and I'm quite confident in Landeskog, Parenteau, McGinn, and Downie as our top 6 wingers, Downie the question mark but he showed remarkable chemistry with O'Reilly and Landeskog

The reason I make that trade is to acquire two left handed defenseman, one who I think is a top pairing d-man, Jake Gardiner, and one who I think is a 2nd pairing dman but when he's on his game is a top pairing guy, Dion Phaneuf, and then a 3rd line winger in Kulemin. This is more than a sufficient return for that package, especially since Stastny has regressed for years (yes he's played with bad wingers but still, regression is regression)

I like the one poster's idea about signing Tyler Bozak, does have connections to Denver I'd love it, that way Johnny Mitchell could play 4C.

It's just me, but I'm a fan of depth over a couple stars and lack of depth. I'd rather two very strong defense pairings and one average pairing over one insanely strong defense pairing and two average pairings

The team has needs everywhere except goaltender and center, but if they draft a center it's no biggie, you can always move one guy to wing. Look at Boston's lineup. Their entire freakin' forward corps is centers, and somehow it works.

And the team already did the "address our needs draft" in 2011, when they went all size queen on us and drafted a bunch of big, gritty guys...the exception being Joachim Nermark. It's never a good idea to not draft BPA because it increases the likelihood that you'll reach for a player instead of getting the best one you can.

Hard to imagine Siemens taking that #3 spot next year, and Gaunce hasn't looked good either. Barrie and Elliott making the team is unlikely as well.

I like the forward lines but the D isn't happening.

mostly because I didn't know who else to put there. DVDG is barely an NHL player, but I'd rather him getting 8 minutes of ice time a game if it means that Connelly or Malone or Heard or whoever is getting a larger role on the farm
