The Avs underlying numbers especially 5v5 started to get markedly better from January 1st until now yet their record vs playoff teams is really bad. I believe we are now at NHL .500 but have technically lost more than we have won. And in most of those games the Avs are getting worked.

The Avs SHOULD beat up shit teams. That is not an indicator. The Avs struggling against playoff opponents is a legit indicator.

Unless you think they magically flick a switch come playoff time. I don't.

My math could be off, but we’ve played 11 playoff teams (not including Pit, Sea, Wpg, Cgy and Fla) we’ve won 5 of those games and lost 1 in a Shootout (5-5-1). If you include the fringe playoff teams listed above we played 9 more games 5-2-2. So that would mean since January 1st we’ve gone 10-7-3 against playoff teams. While going essentially 0.500 against playoff and fringe teams isn’t spectacular it’s certainly not the death sentence people are making it out to be.

I get frustration around the team not having done more at the deadline, but the team has overcome adversity all year. If you don’t think teams get up more for playoff games that’s completely fine, but I think the whole team cares more about games in May than those in March.

I just noticed how Bo clinched his first “level A” bonus and how he will get his second once he hits his 42nd game for “Top four in Time on Ice among Defensemen (in total and/or per game)”. That will be equal to 425.000

He is currently above 0.49 pts/game now as well (0.61 pts/game). If he hits 42 games, this bonus will come into effect too and we would be looking at $637,500 in bonuses that very well might affect next year's cap.

Not one of these West teams can touch a healthy or even relatively healthy Avs team in the playoffs. Have some pride and stop embarrassing yourselves in front of these lurking fools from Minnesota or wherever the ****. @dahrougem2.

Now, the East teams? No comment.

Problem is I don't envision a healthy Avs team. Someone has to die for Landeskog/Lehkonen/Manson to come back.

Doesn't seem like our year, true. We have the championship pedigree, but our overall health is a concern as is scoring depth.
I just don't see how you can win 4 rounds of playoff hockey with JTC at 2C. That's the main reason why we can't beat good teams this year BTW.

There's some potential to escape that. Byram on IR gave some LTIR relief from bonuses and I think that is somewhere around 700k.

The Avalanche look like a team that had to battle through injuries, a short off season and a brutal multiple B2B schedule to get themselves safely into playoff contention . . . and maybe are exhaling a bit now that playoff entry is ensured. I'm pretty sure these guys will respond when the SCPs start. That's the hope at least.

Not sure it matters who we play in Round 1 - they'll be gunning for us. I'm trusting that these guys know what do once the playoffs start and the lights go on.

35 games vs current playoff teams, Compher has:

6 goals
10 assists
-4

Producing at his usual career pace vs those teams. I don't think Compher is the main reason we can't beat good teams this year.

So he's producting as his "usual career pace" (3rd liner) but in a 2C role. Got it.

He doesn't look bad in the majority of the games, but he doesn't really contribute to much of anything either. He's simply a time waster for the top line to get a breather at this point. I still think he has some untapped potential and has a good eye to be a sniper, but hard to score when you can't even make space or get your shot off. He's looking less like a player who can be a solid 2nd liner (I thought he'd at least become a PP specialist like Parenteau) and becoming more like a bounce-around-the-league Malgin.

Yeah, I don't see him ever able to truly hit that level of consistency necessary to fill out a permanent role on a scoring line, or even as a full-time 3rd liner.

There was one sequence that still just irks the hell outta me though.

Right around the 1:58 mark, the puck is in Sammy's corner, Compher smacks the puck away from Sundqvist and Sammy succeeds in getting it away from Steel and sending it up the boards. Now, there's a still a chance the turnover happens anyway, but if Newhook goes in there fast and just whacks the hell outta the puck or just pins it best he can on the half-wall, there's a chance he can dig it out and clear it. But no, he goes in slow AF and soft, Sundqvist hustles, ties up his stick and easily gets the puck away from the boards. I'm swear to God I'm not just saying this but the moment that happened, I thought, "Here we go, it's going in the net."

This is what drives me up the goddamned wall with Newhook. He loses puck battles as is, but even worse, he doesn't even seem to know how to start them properly to begin with. I've said before he still picks the wrong angles on the forecheck when approaching an opposition defender, this issue isn't nearly as bad as it was earlier this season but it's still there. And in this sequence he just plain doesn't even hustle to secure the puck. Hesitant and soft. Cannot do that, especially against a team like Minny.

Yes yes I know, it wasn't all on him last night, but right now he's just...not contributing at all, and that's a huge issue for a so-called 2nd liner. Or even 3rd liner. Also, I realize Sammy lost that battle but that's also just some quick thinking by Steel to kick it to his stick and do a no-look backhand. Equal parts skill and luck, and I also kinda wish Georgiev had that one.

And don't even get me started on his (and Mikko's) shooting last night...

I don't like piling on a guy when he's down. He knows it, Coach Bednar knows it, CMac is probably well aware of it. Most of us appear to be running or have already run out of patience. But...it is only his sophomore season. My biggest concern is that he's due for a contract extension. I don't necessarily have a problem with him being a float around the lineup JTC light player. But he hasn't done a damn thing in my mind to earn that 2M number that keeps floating around, regardless of there being comps that fit the bill. Those teams are free to distribute their cap as they see fit. He might still grow next season? Who knows, but I'm certainly in the camp that would be trying to use him as a potential piece in pretty much any move we make at the deadline or during the summer. We'll be needing to shed salary in order to make room for either a new 2C or JTC being re-signed.

[edit...This is a situation where I would play hardball with Newhook this summer, if I was CMac. I would bridge him; hell, even give him a 1-year deal if he'll take it. But I think he's got to show something more to earn that kind of money on this team.]

Good eye, I was thinking the same thing when I was watching that live, but I didn't scream at the telly because he's been that way the entire season. You can't get angry with someone when they consistently share that trait throughout their entire lives, you know? Some other poster mentioned it in this thread that he's terrible along the boards and this is just another example of many others.

At least the scoring depth could have been adressed at the TDL....Oh, wait...😂
Uhhhhh...what does Jakub Vrana have--something like 8 goals in 10 games for the Blues? And they got him for virtually nothing. Yet CMac gave up a 2nd round pick for Lars Eller. Someone pls. explain that to me.

I don't know the particulars of what happened in Detroit, but the way that Stevie Y handled it, made me think there was an issue between the player and management. We all know how big of a deal character is for this organization. It could be as simple as that.
