When he's not injured or recovering from an injury, he has been one of the best offensive dmen in the league. Hopefully he's had a chance to fully heal and can get back up there.
Offensive dman I completely agree. Overall Dman not even close. If this was 2017 sure but not in 2021.

Stutzle basically stole the available LW spot from him, and it doesn’t help that he doesn’t really play a bottom six kind of game. He should have more of an opportunity to prove himself in the NHL with the Sharks.

We will see. It really depends on if the Sharks are okay running 3 guys with very little NHL experience on the third line. Our top 2 LWs are Kane and Timo. On the right we have Labanc/Leonard/Donato who all fit their lines really well. Currently we have Nieto as the 3rd line LW with Gregor and Donato. I think Balcers could fit well there but it will be interesting if the coaching staff is okay with Donato being the vet on the 3rd line or not.

Balcers plays RW too so that should give you guys some extra flexibility to find a spot for him in the top 9.

Really odd that Ottawa couldn't find a way to keep him.

Sens have an incredible amount of prospect depth, most of which are ready or at the brink of making the NHL. Plus, they don’t want a roster of rookies who will get thrown around, so they’ve brought in some enforcers and veterans.

It's ridiculous to think the Sharks make the trade if they knew they'd fall to the 3rd worst team the year they had to give up the pick. Same with the Sens and Duchene. It was mostly bad luck in either case.

But yes, that's why you do your best to make as many clauses associated with the pick as you possibly can. A GM never knows when his players will make him look stupid.

What does Burns have to do with EK? Without EK behind Burns the best offensive D the Sharks have/had in the past few years is Tim freaking Heed. There’s a world where trades don’t have to have a winner or a loser. Norris is great now but I don’t think he would have been given the same chance in SJ. Tierney would never have been more than a 3C (and a 4C up until this season). Demelo was a bottom pairing D that was scratched and flawed with us and again wouldn’t have gotten the same chance in SJ. Stuetzle is fantastic and is a great get for OTT but he’s still a mystery box while the Sharks were all in and they couldn’t wait for him to be better. EK also allows us to insulate our top prospect (Merkley) and allowed us to take a chance on a guy (Merkley) that talent wise was top 5 in the draft. This trade now looks much more even.

The mental gymnastics in this post is impressive. The trade looked very good at the time, in retrospect not so much. Let's break down the trade.

Trade Date: September 13th, 2018

Ottawa trades:
- Erik Karlsson - signed to a 8 x 11.5 mil contract. still a top pairing defenseman but declined the past 2 years due to injuries. Question mark moving forward but the contract isn't looking good.
- Francis Perron - irrelevant

San Jose trades:
- Chris Tierney - #3C, could fetch a 2nd/3rd + C prospect
- Rudolf Balcers - Claimed back San Jose, B/C prospect
- Dylan DeMelo - Traded for a 3rd
- Josh Norris - B prospect. potential to be a top 6 center, but also a question mark
- 2020 1st (3rd OV, Tim Stutzle) - A prospect, about as close to a lock of being a top 6 forward as there is with a decent chance of being a #1C.

Your argument is that without EK behind Burns you'd have Tim Heed. If you did not do the trade, you would have had $11.5 mil in cap space + all your other assets to obtain another offensive defenseman, while still keeping your 2020 pick which turned out to be Stutzle.

In retrospect, the trade was the difference between San Jose going through a re-tooling phase as opposed to a complete rebuild hampered by some very expensive contracts.
