The mental gymnastics in this post is impressive. The trade looked very good at the time, in retrospect not so much. Let's break down the trade.

Trade Date: September 13th, 2018

Ottawa trades:
- Erik Karlsson - signed to a 8 x 11.5 mil contract. still a top pairing defenseman but declined the past 2 years due to injuries. Question mark moving forward but the contract isn't looking good.
- Francis Perron - irrelevant

San Jose trades:
- Chris Tierney - #3C, could fetch a 2nd/3rd + C prospect
- Rudolf Balcers - Claimed back San Jose, B/C prospect
- Dylan DeMelo - Traded for a 3rd
- Josh Norris - B prospect. potential to be a top 6 center, but also a question mark
- 2020 1st (3rd OV, Tim Stutzle) - A prospect, about as close to a lock of being a top 6 forward as there is with a decent chance of being a #1C.

Your argument is that without EK behind Burns you'd have Tim Heed. If you did not do the trade, you would have had $11.5 mil in cap space + all your other assets to obtain another offensive defenseman, while still keeping your 2020 pick which turned out to be Stutzle.

In retrospect, the trade was the difference between San Jose going through a re-tooling phase as opposed to a complete rebuild hampered by some very expensive contracts.

Sounds like Ottawa is giving Norris a chance to be a top 6 center this year, we'll see how he does.

Ottawa also got a 2019 2nd rounder and they are gonna end up with San Jose's 2021 2nd rounder. Full trade details.

I admit I thought SJ fleeced Ottawa, absolutely fleeced them. Couldn't believe the price paid. It looks like I was wrong and if Stuetzle or Norris is the real deal it will be mentioned among franchise altering trades. Looks amazing for Ottawa already with the potential to be even better.

Unless everything goes really bad for Norris, Stuetzle, Tierney and upcoming 2021 2nd Rounder (i'm not including the picks Sens got for the other pieces) look to be in good shape in this trade.

Karlsson can absolutely bounce back but with the injuries he's had I don't see it happening. Plus that contract is damn long.

Chlapik would have been a worthy pickup too. This was bound to happen when the Sens loaded up on veteran depth guys this off-season. Probably not a big deal for them in the long run.

I think they’ll eventually deal some more depth in the long-run...Colin White looks like he’s getting lost in the shuffle while I’m not sure how much longer you can retain the “hot prospect” label on Logan Brown no matter what he does in the AHL. Norris has clearly supplanted him and there are 50 other centers on the roster. If he doesn’t get a good run of NHL games by the deadline, I’d trade him while he still has some lingering value as a project play for a team lacking upside center prospects.

Disappointed to say the least but he wasn't lined up to be a pivotal piece of our future. Hope he carves out a nice career in the show.

I don't get why he was put on waivers. Did the Sens really have 14 better F's? And you'd think there was someone equally marginal who was either too old to grow with the team or young enough to go through waivers, they could have sent them down for a couple weeks until someone got hurt, and have kept Rudy.

Rough grading season for AHL rookie of the year and top 20 pick. At least throw him a bone and tack on a +.

Norris is a good prospect in a great situation, but I think if he was on an average AHL team he would've been closer to a ~0.6-0.8 PPG season. AHL Rookie of the year doesn't really add on anything for me either. Either way, he'll have every chance to prove himself this year, I'd be happy to be proved wrong with Norris if he establishes himself as a top 6 center, I just don't think he's a guaranteed top 6 center to warrant a B+/A rating.

Either he cracks the SJS lineup or he gets put on waivers again and Ottawa probably claims him because they get 1st dibs.
I don’t think they get first dibs. I think the only benefit OTT gets is if they’re the only team that puts in the claim, they can send him down without waivers.

@mouser is the rule specialist though so he can correct me if I’m wrong

You're completely correct.

The waiver reclaim priority myth is one of those misunderstandings that never dies out.

Knowing what I know now about how it turned out, I’d not do the deal. But based on the information available at the time, I’d unequivocally do the Karlsson deal again.

Giving up what could realistically have been a mid-1st, Norris, a couple seconds, Tierney, Backers, and Demelo for a Norris winner is a deal I’d do again and again even knowing it’d be a $11.5 per year contract.

At this point the trade is all about where you think the Sharks actually are in terms of competing.

As it pertains to Balcers, I love this pick up. He immediately becomes one of our nine most talented forwards, which goes to show how much we could use Norris, Stuezel, and Tierney.

Getting the best offensive D in the league is worth it. Knowing the pick is 3rd overall, yes there’s more of a hesitation but the trade originally was so lopsided for the Sharks.

Define best D is the league for me?

Offensive dman I completely agree. Overall Dman not even close. If this was 2017 sure but not in 2021.

Well if you would have actually read what you quoted and not responded to what you saw in your head, you would realize he made that abundantly clear.

He’s in a group with a bunch of others as young players who are close to NHL ready, except being 23, he’s older than most. You can’t just run an entire team of rookies.

I should have worded it differently I thought they used the last seasons standings for waiver priority Ottawa being 2nd worst last season and Detroit claiming Djoos I thought they were now #1 on the list
