I don't know what goes into their defense metric, which don't look good on that card. His actual numbers look OK. Certainly not bottom quarter of the league bad. Maybe they skew it based on competition?

1989 was good yearColton doesn’t do so hot defensively with Hockey Viz either, but that’s because it’s fallen off lately.

Fitz specifically targeted Palat for his leadership and intangibles, and Burakovsky lacks those in comparison, so I doubt Palat was consolation prize for missing out Burakovsky.
I meant instead of being hyper focused on Gaudreau, they could've been in on him too. They offered Palat a bit more after missing out on him, not sure how anyone can deny that
Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald recruited Palat, telling him he wanted an experienced veteran to help their young talented core take the next step. Fitzgerald said they made a push for Johnny Gaudreau, but Palat was at the top of their list.

Fitzgerald said both Gaudreau and Palat were at the top of their list, and it would have been challenging to fit both under the cap. There was a time where Fitzgerald thought Gaudreau was going to come to New Jersey in the process. “Yeah I would say I thought (that) because of the conversations I had with him and his wife Meredith, that we really connected,” Fitzgerald said.”I know Johnny, my (son) played with him at Boston College. I know his mom and dad. I felt like we were going to be a destination for him. But I’m guessing so were other teams. We put our best foot forward and he chose to go to Columbus for for reasons he gave. He could have gone anywhere.”
Palat could have gone a number of places, as well. Fitzgerald said they had a good idea Tampa Bay wasn’t going to be able to fit him in their cap, so he felt it was “game-on” on Wednesday when free agency opened. Palat said he heard from former Olympic teammate Patrik Elias, a Devils legend, who told him he’d love it in New Jersey.
