Who not just conditioning stint ?

Because there's a time limit on a conditioning stint and they don't know long it'll take him to be ready. Waiving him now was a no risk move, as no one was going to claim a guy who hadn't played all year due to injury when he'll require an indeterminate amount of time to be ready for NHL play. On the other hand, if they were to put him on a conditioning stint and feel that he still needed some AHL games to really be ready after it's over, they'd be in a stickier situation, as teams might be more willing to claim him on waivers under those circumstances.

I'd have expected him to be back up with the Sabres to be honest.
