Completely disagree. Mayfield looked fine carrying the puck and in the offensive zone but he was caught running around a lot and make it tough for his partner. He had several chicken with his head cut off moments. Not going to elevate the guys play because he notched to assists....he was pretty average to below average in the defensive zone and not nearly as steady as Pelech.

Don't know what game you guys watched, I focused on him and he was not very good imo.

Came here to say exactly this. I saw confidence in the offensive zone, but he was somewhat of a liability in his own zone. Lol "chicken with its head cutoff" best describes it. He was basically the equilvamt of Strait in the D zone

Also, to call putting him through waivers a "mistake" is laughable. Come on guys. If it was a mistake, then he wouldn't be NYI property.

Mayfield is on a cheap contract. There only needed to be one team with injuries. At that time I wasn't sure he would pass through waivers, I thought NYI were lucky.
Last season Mayfield got the least offensive zone starts while Mayfield also got much tougher Quality of Competition than Strait, Hickey Mouse and Zidlicky.

Lucky? The other 29 teams didn't want him, plain and simple.

Also, still hating on "hickey mouse"? Thomas Hickey continues to be reliable night in and night out.

Don't hate him, he's just overpaid by 1M. Seidenberg has a good contract. Hickey's bad, will make 3.1M next season. That's not how the cap should be managed.

This x100 - we were also quick to jump on the Mayfield bandwagon after a small sample size in the Capitals series. He is an extremely limited player despite the 2 assists last night.

Yeah, I don't know how anyone can say it's a mistake to get a player you want to keep, but have no room for, through waivers. That's actually a good thing.

Regular? I'd be shocked if he played another 10 games this year. Pelech and Pulock will get those starts with Seids.

Its funny because each of them bring something different:

Pulock: All offense, PP specialist, weak defensive play

Pelech: shutdown D, safe defenseman does everything well but won't put up huge points

Mayfield: I thought he was only a defensive D but apparently he get involved occasionally on the offense. Seems like he might have a higher ceiling than previously thought.

The good ones are worth their weight. He was also very respectable in the Washington series. I didn't get his banishment last year.

Mayfield was always thought to have some offensive upside until he got to Bridgeport.

I'll agree with the bolded - they're worth it and more. Only thing is that they are too far and few between.

I was a big Mayfield detractor. That being said, it seems he has definitely worked on his skating. He looked a lot quicker during this call up and confident skating the puck out of danger. Our young Dmen look good. I'm looking forward to seeing Pulock back with the big club.
