With all the talk of Sanchez going to the pen due to innings restrictions, I wonder if the Jays track the type of innings he throws.

Say his limit is 140 for argument sake. Each of those 140 innings are not all the same.

Do you count a 5 pitch inning 3 up 3 down the same as a 40 pitch inning 4 up 3 down.

Yes I am sure they all balance out but I wonder if teams look at high stress innings and then look at non stress innings when making the decision on capping innings.

It goes much, much deeper than that. I'm sure teams are smart enough to look at pitch count instead of innings, but they're looking at trends in his velocity, spin rate, release point, etc. for signs of fatigue.

Man who helped the Indians get so good? We should hire the guys who drafted most of their stars.

They were good last year too, had one of the best pitching staffs in baseball but couldn't score enough runs to make it useful enough , this year they have.

Atkins and Shapiro built a good team over there, we did hire them!

Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins guests on The Jeff Blair Show to discuss if he’s surprised the success of the Cleveland Indians – his former team – is enjoying thus far this season, whom he credits for building the Tribe’s clubhouse culture, how he evaluates his starting pitching & bullpen, the role for Drew Hutchison, if he has an early read on how the trade market will play out, what area of need he has, and if he has any concerns regarding Russell Martin.

I know. I was just being that guy to point out to the Shapiro haters that he built a solid team over there. Be patient with him. He knows baseball better than any of us.

This series is a tough test for both teams. Cleveland is facing the best team they have faced in a while. I think their streak comes to an end tonight.
YES !!!
LHP Brett Cecil has been activated from DL.
Please please be the pre-injury Cecil from the last 2 seasons please !! The pen is too thin to cope without Cecil playing well.

Cecil had a FIP of 3.84 in 10 innings pitched. 5th best on the team and he wasn't even his sharp usual self. We should buy into that and what he did last year. When he does return to form, we could have 4 bullpen pitchers with a FIP under 3.00 by seasons end. That's not including Sanchez if they decide to bullpen him and Morales if his arm holds up.

Brett Cecil
$3.8m / 1 Years (2016) (Edit)
signed by Toronto Blue Jays on 1/15/2016 (Avoided Arbitration)
2016: $3.8M x 1.

Q: Did the Jays only give him a 1 year deal because he was injured ?

http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=2660&position=P

His Value has dropped to $1.4 but was $10.9 last year. WAR was 1.4, now 0.2.
His Contact% was 68.6% and now is 80%.
His SwingingStrikeout% was 15%, now 8%.
His FIP is 3.84 this year, last year and the year before was 2.34
WHIP is 1.94 (was 0.96 last year).
AVG is .354, was .196 last year. .223 the year before,
He has been pitching well in low leverage situations AVG = 0.214, 3 Hits
He has been pitching fine in medium leverage situations AVG = 0.267, 4 Hits
He has been pitching very bad in high leverage situations AVG = 0.526, 10 Hits (WHIP 4.33)

Hopefully the Cecil of 2015 and 2014 will appear.

So far he's pitched well this year, except when it mattered.
It's not a general decline, as he is doing better than average in less important situations.

Teams have still been running on Martin at will and he's been a negative war player. I would hardly say he's been vintage Russ Martin.

His arm has remained a disappointment, that's true. But he's currently at -0.1 fWAR after being at -0.7 at the end of May, which means he's been great (3 fWAR pace) in June.

He was terrible for a month and a half, and he's been great for a month and a half.

Russell Martin has only his over .250 once in his last 8 years. The year before he signed with the Jays. He also had less homers that year. Maybe he changed his approach to the plate to the typical Jays approach ... "OK, I'm hitting this one out" (or it's harder to hit dingers in Pittsburgh!)
