I did read your post Empo. I know you like to knee jerk. This team will be fine paying Kris Letang 7.25 and Evgeni Malkin 9 mil.
Playing devil's advocate - is fine contending?

Yes. If the market is 4.6 for an Oleksiak and 9.5 for a Seth Jones.
Even if Letang falls off defensively (which he has slightly) there is no evidence his offense is going.
Teams don't lose by paying their best players big money. And Malkin and Letang are still the 3rd and 4th best players on this team most days.
I mean we can go back and forth on this but hes a great young d-man just hitting his prime
What if Oleksiak and Jones aren't the market, but overpaid outliers?
Also, who's the 2nd best player on the team?
All they talked about this morning on the local radio station was throwing an offer sheet at Makar, $13 million for 7 years.Makar and Fox are losing their minds after Heisekanen's and Jones' deals.

WTF are the hawks doing lol
That's steep but Columbus is also giving up Tampa's 1st this year.
But I think it's smart for Columbus to add Tampa's 1st to get an additional 1st in the future.
He's a good transition defensemen in his prime but he's not good defensively and not productive enough to justify that contract. His proj.WAR over the term of the contract is -23.1. In my opinion. And also according to the numbers apparently.
Maybe they are.
Guentzel.
