Imagine how good Letang would look if we had a legitimate 2nd pairing.

Bingo!
It's my(and should be JR's) top priority this summer.
What do i do if i'm sitting there in the summer heat and nothings being offered back?
I shed cash on it no matter what like buying out JJ, trading Olli.
Maybe VAN balks at an Edler re-up and we can move in to scoop him up...
If theres no go there as well, i just roll into the season with...

Dumo-Tang
MP/Riiko-Schultz
MP/Riiko-Guds
Trots or cheap NHL vet

And keep the flexibility to beef it up in season.

I don't care if we had an all star 2nd pair - Letang would still be playing 26 mins a game, which is entirely too much. You want guys with his skill out there as much as possible, which I get. If the staff could give him 21 mins a game, I think you would see his mental gaffs drastically reduce. I have zero trust that it would happen regardless of who is on the 2nd pair. JR even recognized that as as an issue in the offseason. He did a shit job trying to fix that issue, but he tried nonetheless.

It also is prime time to beef up the F group via UFA.
I know you can't get into the Duchene, Panarin, Skinner, Pavelski $ mix but:

Eberle
Hayes
Nyquist
Johansson
Zucc
Williams
Nelson
Panik
Lee
Hagelin
Donskoi
Dzingel
Ferland
Weal
Connolly
Tanev
Smith-Pelly
Hathaway
Acciari
Kuhnackl
Chiasson
Ennis

Alot there that i like and why i have no qualms with letting guys like Wilson, ZAR go.

Which is weird because the NHL is a young mans game, so have some older players but the young, fast, hungry, skilled are the players to have.
While this is true it takes young guys a considerable learning curve. Boston is filled with older players and they just took out Toronto

Would anyone want to hire Mike Babcock if he is fired from the Leafs?

He’s not getting fired. He’ll take heat but Kadri is going to be scapegoat #1. Them not having a legit #1 D will be next. Anderson was shit in this past game.

If they get some defensemen in to help them and some brain cells for Kadri, then Babcock will take more heat.

Not saying much, that team always lose early. Surround Pens by young, skilled, hungry and fast players with our older core and we would do great.

I know you can't get into the Duchene, Panarin, Skinner, Pavelski $ mix but:

Eberle seems unlikely, but would be nice.
Hayes This feels like a guy JR will target, but we'll see.
Nyquist
Johansson This would be a savvy pickup. He can play anywhere in the lineup
Zucc Yes please
Williams ...ehhh he's good, but going to get more than he's likely worth. Or takes a cut to stay.
Nelson stays put
Panik
Lee He'll stay on the Island
Hagelin maybe at the right price (He should be looking to get paaaaaaid though)
Donskoi possibly
Dzingel yes, depending on cost
Ferland want
Weal
Connolly This would be a good pick up
Tanev
Smith-Pelly no
Hathaway
Acciari possibly, if available and not too much $
Kuhnackl agree with others, better than ZAR, but he'll get too much money from someone.
Chiasson maybe
Ennis This could be a good under cover pickup. He's never won a cup so he' still hungry, and he's a pretty shifty player.

Definitely some good pick ups to be had. I think it will depend on what salary is moved out, and what comes back with it. Lots of options though.

Pens need to do a lot of surgery at the draft before dipping into the FA market.

JR is going to be wild this year. Lots of other teams with incentives to make changes: Nashville, Winnipeg, Toronto, Tampa, not to mention teams that didn’t make the playoffs and a few possible others still hanging on.
