Every dark cloud has a silver lining. Love those dogs but once they're gone I won't be here for winter.

Winter is the best time of the year in Edmonton. It's usually when we find out if the Oilers season is a whole turd or if they are a playoff team. Gives us the opportunity to

A) Go to bars in misery
B) Go to bars delving in happiness

After thinking about this a bit more I dont think trading for Risto is a good idea.
I would rather go with whats there right now.
If getting an offensive Dman is a priority this season then given a choice between Risto and Gardiner on a 1 year deal I go with Gardiner every time.
If Holland can make that work by dumping some salary (Russell) in a trade then I am fine with that.

At least then Gardiner comes off the books next season and that provides more time for Bouchard to develop.

If you imbibe enough liquid courage, every bar and every night can be delving in happiness. ;)

Our Priority has been an Offensive Dman every year and it never works out. Can we just trade for one who's on the block for once? Risto's value is decreasing. Buffalo doesn't want him on their team any longer. Bringing in Risto will not only help us offensively but it may also help Jesse feel more homely

If the only advantage to getting Risto over Gardiner is so Jesse feels more at home then no thanks. Thats not reason enough.
Ultimately I think that the Oilers are better off developing an offensive dman..

Gardiner has back problems doesn't he? He's also going to cost a lot. So many players coming off of Toronto are overvalued

Ristolainen suffers from playing too many minutes at too high a level of competition. He's not great in his own end, and he's historically been played like a #1 despite not being one.

He would look good in the bottom four with first unit powerplay time. He's a talented player who would benefit from a fresh start.

He would not be a good fit with Nurse, which means he would have to be bottom pairing. Benning can't play on the second pair and thrive, and Russell is better on the left. So Ristolainen isn't a perfect fit, but he does improve our roster.

Trade for Spurgeon. Sign Kronwall. Trade Russell and Benning.

Klefbom Spurgeon
Nurse Larsson
Kronwall Persson
Lagesson Jones

Shattenkirk expected to be bought out I wonder if Holland could temp him with a short contract where he gets to rebuild his name getting Mcdavid pp gravy points.

If it didn't work the year before being a pending UFA it's not going to work in an offseason where he knows he's got $7.7M coming already regardless of what he does

Lol how do we know he's not a good fit with Nurse? They haven't even played together. Nurse has also improved every year. Also, Benning may come into his own next year.

This is a fresh start for all of our Dmen with Dave Tippett, who actually is good with Defence. Klefbom, Larsson etc may return to form. Big "maybe", but there's a chance

Ristolainen tends to misread plays, lose his check, and loves getting forward. Nurse tends to misread plays, lose his check, and loves getting forward.

So while we wouldn't know for sure unless we saw them play together, we do know from observations that they would both want to get forward and would both struggle covering.

Their big difference beyond handedness is that Nurse specialises in carrying the puck out with his plus skating whereas Ristolainen specialises in generating shots with his plus hands and shot.

Cause both are lost in their own zone? It’s pretty simple.

Let me get this straight a player who has just been bought out is somehow going to command more on the market after the buyout than he was making during the actual contract? If there is a single team in the league that would even entertain that they would have just traded for him, got him at a reduced cost compared to what you're suggesting, and probably get NY to throw something in to save them from the caphit for the next 4 years.

Keep one thing in mind with Ristolainen... he plays hard minutes on a team that isn't very good... at all.

Over the past 3 seasons at ES... looking at his adjusted TOI% QoC... it's the most difficult on his team among the dmen by a fair margin at 29.43

Similarly his adjusted xGF%QoC over the past 3 seasons is also a difficult 50.11

His teammates while he was on the ice over that same 3 year time period...

TOI% QoT 28.21 and xGF% QoT 47.35

So essentially every time he steps on the ice... it's already slanted fairly severely towards his own net regardless of what he does out there. To spin that disadvantage into a positive isn't an easy task for 1 player.

His adjusted RelT GF/60 is -.04 and his adjusted RelT GA/60 is +.21 at ES over the past 3 seasons... so yes he's still a net negative at both ends of the ice in relation to his teammates but I do cut him some slack when you take into account the toughness of the minutes he plays.

His QoC and difficulty of the minutes he plays is actually tougher than any Oilers dman currently.
By comparison, the adjusted QoC stats for Oilers dmen over the past 3 seasons at ES...

Klefbom TOI% QoC 29.25 and xGF% QoC 49.85
Larsson TOI% QoC 29.24 and xGF% QoC 49.86
Nurse TOI% QoC 29.12 and xGF% QoC 49.92
Russell TOI% QoC 29.05 and xGF% QoC 49.98
Benning TOI% QoC 28.65 and xGF% QoC 49.8

Risto is basically what Schultz was in Edmonton, being put in a position to fail. Since we have Larsson to do a lot of the heavy lifting on the right side I could see him being worth his contract here. With Bouchard coming sooner than later it might not make sense to give up a lot for him though.

Is Spurgeon this years Oiler fans dream player? I doubt we get him
He’s not signed an extension yet and is from Edmonton. That’s a lot different than some RHD we’ve lusted after in the past who were a year from UFA like Burns, Karlsson, or Doughty. If the Wild can’t come to terms with him soon I could see them shopping him. Replacing Russell with Spurgeon would really change the dynamic of our defence in a positive direction IMO.

I don't think you read that properly. Try reading it again.
