Why would so many people want to get rid of Ceci? The guy has been terrific in his role. Makes less than 3.5 million for a couple more years. A similar player (No.3-4) would easily cost 4-4.5 for 5 on the open market.
Because Oleksiak is a big upgrade over Ceci that is why, Ceci is alright Oleksiak is way better

Only one of Ceci or Kulak should be on the team and neither of them should be in the top 4. That's easily the biggest hole on the roster right now.

Haha. Qu'elle surprise.

I wish the NHL would standardize draft rights across all leagues. Have the teams hold rights to all drafted players up to one year after turning pro or some variation of that. Brind'Amour is a low end prospect but able to skirt around his draft rights held until August is bogus.

You're not gonna get better than Ceci at his price point, and we dont have the money to get a true top pairing guy to put with Nurse.
Nurse doesn't need a true top pairing guy he needs a legit top 4 guy who can pass. Nurse-Ceci playing hot potato because neither of them can move the puck well is the only time fire drills happen on this team right now.

Skill and size. Yamamoto is a vanilla player making $3.1 million a year. Holloway would have better numbers if he got the same push that Yamamoto had. So would Kostin, Bjugstad and even Foegele.
Disagree. We've seen how quickly it takes any one of those guys to fall out of favor when they're given the opportunity to run on a skill line. There's a reason why Connor and Leon like playing with Yamamoto.

It's still early to guess what happens in the offseason and I wouldn't say anything is impossible in terms of who may get moved, but Yamamoto could very well sign a cheaper extension in the summer looking at his year. Assuming that he's a 30 point guy who touches all parts of the roster, I've got a difficult time seeing how we could realistically replace that for less with certainty.

He's still just 24.

Puljujarvi healthy scratched?
Not that it has anything to do with JP but mentioning the Hurricanes brings into focus for me the adaptability of Rod's coaching inface of a strategy from the Islanders. Martinook a PK specialist and third liner ended up tied for the most TOI.
Regrettably Power Stance continued on in with what had worked for him before but which LA was well prepared for.
Woodcroft ....am positive he will realize what to do.

Yamamoto is undersized, injury prone and often snake-bit, but vanilla? No. He's a demon on the forecheck. He takes more pucks away on the forecheck than ANYONE on the team. Probably has the best stick for deflections too. As a matter of chemistry, Yamamoto has been Draisaitl's all-time best RW.

Foegele is a 3W, Holloway is young and may be better soon and Kostin? Well, Klim just went cold. Hard to push a guy who wasn't effective enough to stay in the line-up over Devon Shore until two weeks ago.
Puljujarvi got a regular shift until he was traded. The coaches and management are giving Yamamoto every chance possible like they did to Pulju and Yamamoto has been sucking all the way through.

The problem is that he is not going to get "out of the way" of a shot from the point. You cant always help it and as the stakes go up the more he will sacrifice.

From 4 years ago. Not something that is not considered at all and something to be naive about.

Tyler Yaremchuk:
I get a little nervous when McDavid is out killing a penalty because obviously the last thing this teams needs is for him to get hurt blocking a shot. Given how much they play McDavid at even strength and on the powerplay, I think McLellan can leave him on the bench during penalty kills. In general though, I don’t mind skilled players killing penalties if they’re good at it. I like that McLellan trusts players like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Kailer Yamamoto enough to put them on the PK.
Chris the Intern:
I love seeing Connor on the penalty kill. Playing him more will always be better than us. My one concern with this is that I really don’t want to see Connor blocking shots out there. I mean, him getting injured from blocking a shot is the last thing we need, right?

Baggedmilk:
I like the idea of Connor out on the penalty kill but I also hate the idea of him blocking shots. I get why you’d want him out there, that’s obvious to anyone with eyes and a brain, but I get nervous when I think about him sacrificing his body to prevent power play clappers from the point.

Also, Gregor from this year:

"Of course some will argue that the penalty kill is no place for a superstar, that the risk of injury is too great and the player’s energy is better spent in other manpower situations. My own take is I don’t mind it at all. Of course I’m old enough to remember the days when it was commonplace for teams to use their top players on the kill, and nobody excelled at it more than the Edmonton Oilers of the 1980s. That squad, which was pure dynamite on the counter attack, recorded the 4 most productive seasons for shorthanded goals of all time, and 7 of the top 14."

The difference is the shots are harder than they have every been
Just a reminder of this discussion and dangers of PK and having McDavid penalty killing. Janmark out for unforseeable timedrame with likely broken finger. @jimkijenkins

Dig your head out of the sand. He broke his finger on the pk from a shot just as I mentioned a month ago is always a risk for those on the Pk It happens more times than you think. The finger between the puck and the stick has no chance. Also ankles. The more times you are put in those situations the more risk. The fact that you wont even acknowledge that shows a lot

I’m with you.

I think the issue was they had nobody else to play with Nurse and as the first pairing it wasn’t going well.

Then we traded for Ekholm, thus reducing the first pairing minutes and making them far more effective.

Ceci is at his best on a middle pairing and because he couldn’t hold his own on the top pairing before Ekholm people decided they were done with him.
Nurse is playing 6s less a game on the PK, 1s less on the PP, and and 16s ES. So nothing significant.
I can't find any evidence that he's getting easier QoC or zone starts. Ekholm and Bouchard have taken minutes away from 4-7 defenseman

The zone starts and competition quality has declined for Nurse, who has seen a 2-3% increase in o-zone starts and has played less with McDavid's line since Ekholm arrived (which means less against other top lines usually).

Though he still plays the toughest overall minutes on the Oilers, Ekholm-Bouchard has taken the cherry offensive roles as they've promoted and contributed offensively at a level that no Oilers defense pairing has since 08-09.

Essentially playing less with McDavid's group has meant they're playing a grittier game against grittier players and with better checkers like Bjugstad and Janmark. That suits Ceci a lot more.

Pretty much this.

Nurse never needed his minutes reduced, he needed his quality of competition reduced
