Kinda. All his teams suck, and I’m a big believer that winners win and there’s a group of talented players (Duchene, Oli Jokinen) who are always on underachieving teams. They do everything you’d want in a hockey player skill wise, they just don’t ever play on winning teams.

But the trade wasn’t great, that year with Brassard was amazing, so no regrets

Trading Zibanejad for Brassard didn't look bad on paper (the 2nd inclusion sucked but we all know it was for Melnyk to save money). Brassard was the better player at that moment, a pretty good player in NY and a massive playoff performer. In the end, they used Brassard 2 seasons and went in a deep playoff run with him but he unfortunately started to decline sooner/younger that you would have hoped (long injury history). Dorion did very well flipping him back to Pittsburgh before his value plummeted and now the Sens have JBD, Tychonick, Gustavsson and a 2020 3rd round pick as a result.

All that being said, Zibanejad should have been extended long-term by the Sens. You don't trade 23 y/o players like that, with that kind of potential. The mistake they probably made was to think he had peaked already. Sure, he already had 281 NHL games under his belt (+ 16 playoffs games) but he was already a good player who could only go up because he had a lot of time in front of him (still very young)

The trade is not the disaster that is painted on this board, because the team still have/had 2 years of Brassard, JBD, Tychonick, Gustavsson and a 2020 3rd round pick out of Zibanejad (and a 2nd, but financial implications) but still pretty bad unless some of these pieces (JBD mainly) end up real good for Ottawa. Still wish this trade never happened, Zibby would look pretty good in our core right now.

Dorion is in a lose-lose situation with HF fans. If he does not call up and "reward" the young guys he will be accused of mis-handling our prospects and destroying their confidence.

If he calls up the players who are doing well in Belleville he is going to get accused of two things: 1. He is rushing their development and 2. He is ruining the tank!

You forgot #3. ruining the B-Sens

He’s got 24 points and +17 after 19 games I’m not sure he has much to learn in the AHL anymore. The scary part is they have 5 guys that could be ready next year, they might as well try to make sure they are not all complete rookies. At some point we might end up moving some young guys and regretting it.

They almost all have NHL experience already and are stacking up pro experience though. Sens have been handling prospects pretty well IMO. Patience is key and it's a luxury you have in a rebuild.

I hope for a trade to a decent team. Sry guys.

Thanks partially to San Jose, there is a very strong possibility that Ottawa becomes more than a decent team in the very near future... Balcers will have a lot of competition to battle with for ice-time, particularly if some of Duclair/Pageau/Brown/Paul are extended (assuming all of Ennis, Ryan, Namestnikov, Sabourin, Boedker and Anisimov will be gone soon)

The internal competition (particularly at forward) will be ferocious :

Forwards spots locked-up : Tkachuk, White
Other spots locked-up if extended : Duclair, Pageau, C. Brown, Paul, Tierney
Contenders for spots now/very soon : Brown, Batherson, Norris, Balcers, Formenton, Abramov, Chlapik, Davidsson, Veronneau
Contenders for spots in the near future : Pinto, Gruden, Crookshank
Long shots : Kelly, Novak, Kastelic, Nurmi, Wilkie

AND, most importantly, Ottawa has 2 first round picks in June (look both top-10 at the moment) and this draft is forward heavy and three second round picks (same in 2021)

Balcers will have to be good, like any young player.

Yeah, we're both Latvians. I have no freaking idea why he wants Balcers to be traded. It doesn't make any sense from the Sens perspective.

He doesn't appear like a Sens fan, that's why

Why is Paul locked-up? Rudy already proved last year that he can play at the NHL level. This year he has improved considerably.

Invisible, I think he had one good shift in the 2nd period other than that, he was invisible. That's the problem with these skilled small soft players, if they are not contributing offensively they are invisible. Good trade bait though, like Brannstrom, Abramov & Davidsson.

Good job assessing the player after one game. Very smart.

Just like Boucher, the coach didn't and will not use Balcers properly. There is no way he will produce or even look visible if the coaches doesn't learn how to use them. Same sh*t goes for Bathrson and other skilled prospect we keep bringing up and then sending back them down.

Unless they are given Tkachuk like treatment for 100 games, we can't judge any of them fairly

What exactly is proper use of Balcers?

im not sure where you would like to put him? we don't necessarily even have a skilled centerman to put him with.

How would people compare Rudy to Norris who is suppose to be the better prospect. I know they are at different stages of there development but who is suppose to come out ontop

Umm he may not even turn out to be a solid NHL player, why do you think he needs to be on the first line? I have no idea why people think every player is a top line player when they are rookies he’s a fifth round draft pick and he is 22 it’s time for him to sink or swim.
Do you think first line players would struggle and suck on the third line or do you think they would earn a spot higher on the team? If a guy needs the best players and the most ice time to hardly do anything he probably isn’t going to make the grade
