My take on Ginning after two years watching him is that at the same time that he was probably the worst defender during the regular season, he was actually amongst the best in both play-offs. He is also a really good locker room guy and someone that will add value to any group since he is team first.

With this being said, I really don't know why he is being brought over, is it just because it's a 2nd that someone somewhere wants to take a last chance on? I think he will try it out and then go back to SHL after 1 or 2 seasons in the AHL.

We heard that about Keith Yandle and don't give a shit. Most players in the NHL are "good lockeroom guys" and it adds no actual on-ice value where the game is played. It's typically only emphasized in bad players to justify their presence.

He's being brought over because the Flyers are run by mouth-breathing knuckle-draggers and value all of the wrong things in their players, especially defensemen.

I’m enjoying that Ginning is on track for the NHL after my “lock to play in the NHL” comment was memed like my Ghost “goner” comment.

I’ll get a kick out of it regardless (& I’ve acknowledged since he was the wrong choice).

He’ll play here or elsewhere.

No primary assists all season. He'll fit right in.

He was a 3rd pair SHL defenseman getting blasted in his D+4 year. Signed solely because he’s big, and they don’t want to admit he stinks. Don’t pat yourself on the back too hard because he’s playing in the AHL as a soon to be 23 year old.

I don't get why Fletcher and Flahr wouldn't want to admit that. They didn't draft him.

Being among the best players for a championship team suggests there's real potential there, a lot of players go MIA in the playoffs at every level, so rising to the occasion is a good sign that there maybe something to work with.

The question is why Ginning over St Ivany, given this team's need at RHD. Is St Ivany that bad of a skater?
They didn't draft him, so the 2nd rd pick means nothing, they dumped Rubtsov who was a 1st rd pick.

They may well see him as a good fit in the AHL, a physical defensemen in an organization dominated by small defenseman, with lots of professional experience, and a good locker room guy.

Teams are always looking for depth defensemen who are good on the PK. That'll be Ginning's niche if he makes it.

Good teams are not looking for one dimensional special teams specialists. That's very cap inefficient.

That the Flyers do value that kind of role-centric specialization is a big part of why they're bad.

It's a salary cap league. Every team needs low-priced depth. Every team could use a low-priced 3rd pairing defenseman who can hold his own 5 on 5 and help the PK.

Luke Schenn won a Cup with Tampa. Robert Bortuzzo played a key PK role for St. Louis when they won a Cup.

2nd star 2 the right
i am interested in whose actually watch this guy play. and their thoughts only. I have seen no evidence that he can become a good 3rd pair PK guy. and the only insight is sterotypes.

Yes, it's a salary capped league. That's why the best teams have passable all-around players and not role-specific specialization.

Schenn and Bortuzzo can/could play regular ES shifts and keep up. Very different from the kind of player the Flyers pursue, and Ginning would count in that "bad" pile.

L Schenn "could keep up." Really?

Like Yandle last year in Florida, if he's highly sheltered (Schenn in TB) his deficiencies can be hide, but otherwise he's not much better than Seeler, slow, can't puck handle, has little offensive skill.
He's your generic big, slow 3rd pair defensive specialist veteran.

Schenn is not remotely as bad as Yandle in Florida, who could not be hidden and who was a massive detriment.

Well, most of the scouts are still there. I mean, it’s also pretty easy, in light of the whole Risto debacle, to believe those two convinced themselves Ginning has value as a big boy.

I guess. I'm still surprised he got signed.
