Strangely enough almost all of our Olympic calibre players seem to be playoff bound, but I have hopes we might get some Trashers, Stars and Devils players, and hopefully some really unexpected star player to give us a legit shot at the gold.

We start early, as usual.

Possible team: (we may hold three spots for Lundqvist, Enström and Eriksson etc as first round Stanley Cup losers). Team is based on current standing (NHL) and no injuries or child birth/care/happy family incl. dog or nationality issues. And, twins may or may not arrive.

Lindström - Mårtensson - Weinhandl
Pääjärvi - Backlund - Hörnqvist
Omark - Davidsson - Thörnberg/Videll
Persson - Wallin - Sjöström
Nilsson R

Rundblad - Johansson
Ekman-Larsson - Bäckman
Murray - Hjalmarsson
Tallinder

Gustavsson
Lindbäck
Liv

Bäckman? No thanks.

jfc64, you may want to consider klasen and lindback, they are playing pretty good

Sure, Lindbäck at least. Give him 10 more games. But I feel Mårts will come up with the golden words come spring "we have good goalkeepers on this side of the atlantic ocean". Omark and Harju seem ok as well. Maybe even Engqvist and Johansson.

We can probably get good young players in Backlund, MP, Omark to build around along with Weinhandl and MÃ¥rtensson up front anyways which is a decent start. Although Calgary has a shot at the playoffs. Johansson, OEL and Rundblad is good start in the back end aswell along with Gustavsson in net with potential upgrade in Lundqvist.

Only fear with this core is that they're pretty soft to play against, so we would need to add some grit and size. Maybe a couple of Hörnqvist, Hjalmar, Grossman, Murray & Hedman. If we can't get more NHL forwards add in the best forwards throughout the year in the ET-tournaments.

Lets be realistic though, MÃ¥rtensson and Weinhandl are what, 30? Not old, more like prime. Each time I watch them play in KHL they leave me impressed, Weinhandl is outplaying team mates like Afinogenov and Sushinsky. They're our two best European forwards, and by quite some margin. Knowing the tournament is played on big ice they'll be there, whether it is on a primary role or 3rd line. And they should.

I think that you really should considerate putting SEL players on the team.
Will WC 2011 be played at big rinks?

Some of the players in SEL are by the best players in the world when it comes to "big icehockey". Wallin, Junland, Thörnberg, Umicevic perhaps. They are all good players to fill upp a roster

Sorry, but you must be out of your mind if you think that about those players. I mean, they are decent, but...

If first round of Stanley Cup was over today we could have these players to chose from: (european players, non-playoff players and projected first round losers). Players in bold are with us from day one. Quite a strong team even if I doubt Alfredsson or Tallinder will find motivation to join.

Steen - MÃ¥rtensson - Weinhandl
Thörnberg - Davidsson - Alfredsson
Nilsson – Persson - Jämtin
Lindström - Warg - Pääjärvi
Huselius - Krüger – Zackrisson
Axelsson - Berglund - Hörnqvist

Johansson - Ekholm
Rundblad - Hjalmarsson
Karlsson - Tallinder

Enström - Oduya
Larsson - Bäckman
OEL - Kronwall S.

Lundqvist
Lindbäck
Gustavsson
Liv
Larsson

-----------------------------------------------------------

Thörnberg-Davidsson-Weinhandl * Nilsson–Persson-Jämtin * Lindström-Krüger-Hörnqvist *Huselius-Steen-Zackrisson * Pääjärvi-Landeskog

Karlsson - Enström * Johansson - Ekholm * Rundblad - Hjalmarsson * Larsson - OEL

Lundqvist/Liv/Larsson

If we're considering these goalies we might aswell consider Markström, Lindbäck and Enroth depending on situation.

In the moment I wrote this Lindbäck was projected to WIN first round in Stanley Cup an thus not be available. And Markström and Enroth are sure talented but not proven on NHL level just yet. Liv and Larsson has been very good in Europe this season. The situation might be that one of the NHL goalies are either Gustavsson OR Lundqvist if he is available. Both Markström and Enroth is in the picture, though.
