I'd be willing to bet that because of their past relationship, Quinn gives Shattenkirk the C which would be ridiculous..

If that happens id be disgusted and the rebuild won’t be complete until Shattenkirk is gone

I certainly wouldn't be happy with it since Shattenkirk hasn't really made any kind of impact on this team as of yet..
Does he even deserve an A?
I mean, hes certainly a good mouthpiece for the team as he says all the right things but that's just not enough for a letter as far as I'm concerned..

Shattenkirk was an A for the Blues. He’s a veteran guy on a young team

I don’t think he’ll be named captain but I don’t see the issue if he was given a letter

It’s a non issue as far as I’m concerned

How about we let the guys in the room and the coaching staff determine who they want voicing themselves and their message in the room?
No - the perspective of the fans is definitely important than what actually happens at practice and in the locker room - and if they don't understand then we should have a 24/7 following the players around so we can vote on Captain and Alternates better

The only thing going for him in my eyes is he took a fair deal instead of what his market value was.. he’s a 4-6 PP specialist. Not the sort you want wearing letters.

Imo letters are for:
Superstars/face of franchise
Loud leaders
Top defensive defensemen
120% effort forwards

I say no one gets the C for now.
Zucc is probably the closest too it but I was disappointed by his effort last year(although he was screw by AV as far as consistent linemates and we know he relies more on chemistry than most) and of course his age/contract factor in as wel

I couldn't agree more

Giving letters based on skill level is such a fallacy

Letters are for guys that the players look to for guidance, assistance, and reason. A player that exemplifies what the coach wants in a player, whether that comes from practice, player relations, or even ability to handle the media is at the discretion of the coach and front office. When a highly skilled player gets a letter it is because he excels in the other areas of the game as well, the stuff we don't see on the ice.

Also, Shattenkirk is not a 4-6 Dman. Your evaluation is crapola.

Shattenkirk was on the 3rd pair for both st. louis and washington.... Just because our defense sucks and he can eat minutes doesnt mean hes at that level.

And I think theres a bit of causality there with giving skilled players letters. More often than not players are so skilled because of their effort level and their dedication to hockey. The instances of skilled guys with a bad work ethic are minuscule compared to the examples of skilled players that are highly motivated and have good work ethic

For the record - Shattenkirk being named captain wouldn’t shock me, but I don’t expect it to happen. I’d be pretty surprised if we even named a captain, really. What’s the rush to do so? We have Hank, who is the proverbial captain. Just run 4 A’s again until hopefully a guy like Kreider, Zibby, or perhaps Howden, Andersson, Lindgren steps up and earns it.

I agree about the skilled player thing, but that is not a causal connection. Not all skilled players should wear letters and not all who wear letters are skilled players. It is why I said that your comment about letters being for superstars is a fallacy. Like I said, giving a player a letter should always, and usually does, have a lot more to do with what happens outside of game night - practice, locker room, offseason, etc.

Yah, he has never played less than 19:50 TOI in a season. There is no one in the NHL that would say a bottom pairing Dman plays 20-22 minutes a night. This is just some agenda bs with nothing substantive to back it up other than a hot take. He is at worth a 4th pairing guy, so labeling him as a "4-6" is just some straight up garbage. I'd say he is more a 2-3 and also excels on the PP.
