I really wonder if he really intended to file or if the Rangers asked him to.
Can he file, we sign him without going through the arbitration process, but we still are allowed a buyout in the 2nd window?

That’s great. Hopefully that’s the way it goes and we buyout Smith. I always hated a player going through that process. Usually damages the relationship.Yes. The buyout window isn't dependent on him actually going to arbitration. It's just based on the player filing for arbitration.
Moreover, a Club shall not be entitled to exercise an Ordinary Course Buy-Out outside the regular period for: (i) any Player who was not on the Club's Reserve List as of the most recent Trade Deadline, or (ii) any Player with an Averaged Amount less than $2,750,000. The dollar amount of $2,750,000 set forth in this Section 11.18 shall be increased on an annual basis at the same percentage rate of annual increase as the Average League Salary
If we do go the buyout route, what do you guys want to see GTFO?
- Staal
- Smith
- Shatty
If we're doing a buyout of a D, I'd prefer it to be only Smith. Shattenkirk's second year is too prohibitive and Staal still has value to this team for at least another year.
This also takes him off the OS market as well correct?
For the record, whoever we buy out won't count against the cap, right?
That 2nd year for shatty hurts. Big time
