I really wonder if he really intended to file or if the Rangers asked him to.

I hope it's the latter, as it would likely mean that they already have the numbers worked out and are just waiting on other moves to clear cap.

Can he file, we sign him without going through the arbitration process, but we still are allowed a buyout in the 2nd window?

Yes. The buyout window isn't dependent on him actually going to arbitration. It's just based on the player filing for arbitration.

That’s great. Hopefully that’s the way it goes and we buyout Smith. I always hated a player going through that process. Usually damages the relationship.

Just so people know, there is a limit of 3 buyouts outside the regular period over the course of the CBA. Thus far we haven't used any of them, and I seriously doubt we'll use that many this year, but something to keep in mind.

Also, I posted in the other thread about buying out Strome, but I forgot about the limit for the 2nd buyout window:

Moreover, a Club shall not be entitled to exercise an Ordinary Course Buy-Out outside the regular period for: (i) any Player who was not on the Club's Reserve List as of the most recent Trade Deadline, or (ii) any Player with an Averaged Amount less than $2,750,000. The dollar amount of $2,750,000 set forth in this Section 11.18 shall be increased on an annual basis at the same percentage rate of annual increase as the Average League Salary

The number for this season is 3.4 mil. Strome falls below that, so he cannot be bought out during this window.

That 2nd year for shatty hurts. Big time

Of the 3, Staal's 2nd year is the most manageable. It only goes up by 800k, while our other dead cap amounts drop by 3.325 mil.

I wonder if there's a deal to be made with Edmonton or Anaheim for Shattenkirk. Shatty for Russel would save us 2.65 mil this year and next. If we bury him, that's another 1.075 mil. Or we could possibly do Shatty for Manning and Benning, which saves us 2.5 mil, but we could bury them both and save another 2.15 mil, and both only have 1 year remaining on their contracts.

Anaheim has cap space and only 5 dmen at the NHL level, and another 5 signed dmen prospects. Maybe they'd take Shatty if we take back Eaves, who has 1 year left at 3.15 mil.

This also takes him off the OS market as well correct?

Yes, once a player files for arbitration, he is no longer eligible to sign an offer sheet. If the team is the one that files, then the player can still sign an OS.

No thanks on a Shattenkirk buyout. He might be a PP specialist for now, but I don't think it'll be worth it to suffer through that 6+ million cap penalty the 2nd year. Either see if he can be moved now or wait until after 7/1 next season and try and move him after his bonus is paid to a cap floor team.

Yea, forget that option.

If Shatty was a UFA and could be had for 3.3M for 2 years, he would have been signed by numerous teams. I think Gorts can trade him as long as he doesn't expect much in return.

Looking at the figures, a Staal buyout makes the most sense if they were going to go that direction. Smith's doesn't save a ton once factoring in a rookie replacement, so you might as well just send him to the AHL if he isn't in the team's plans and doesn't impress in camp.

I'd rather they trade Namestnikov for a pick and not have to buy out anyone, but that looks less and less likely. As it is they probably have to do one buyout AND move either Kreider or Namestnikov before the season to get under.

IMO a buyout should be an absolute last resort...its easy to say who cares about the dead space in future years but we are sitting here looking to find ways to clear at least $6 mil in cap space. meanwhile we've got $3.6 mil in dead space on the books for girardi's buyout. so we'd only have to move 2.4 mil if it wasn't for that. now i'm not trying to get into an argument over whether or not we should have bought him out cause thats over and done with. i'm just pointing out that you never know what impact that dead space might have down the road...so avoid the dead space if you can

that said looking at the potential buyouts...the ONLY buyout that makes any sense IMO is brendan smith.

they aren't buying out staal, he's more likely to be named captain than bought out. you can't buy out shattenkirk cause the year 2 dead space is almost his full salary...and you can trade guys like namestnikov or strome.

a brendan smith buyout saves $3,379,167 mil this year...combine that with a trade of namestnikov and you've cleared enough space. the year 2 cap hit for smith jumps up a bit but it almost matches the drop in girardi's dead space. the combined dead space between smith and girardi this year would be 4.58 mil, the dead space next year would be 4.26 so its a virtual wash and doesn't cause additional issues.

so i don't like buyouts but smith is the one that would make sense.

the deal we need to make though is trading namestnikov with minimal retain...
