And Poehling and Suzuki are close but the prospects aren't exactly knocking on the door. Ina year or two, for sure, for now they are still developing.

If we're in Cap Hell one day, its going to be in 2 or 3 years... when those kids are done developing.

Meanwhile, the cap will keep increasing. The Cap Hell argument is a freaking myth. It's not a problem when you know how to prioritize .

We aren’t?? The blues were dead last in January
This contender stuff needs to end. Things change year to year now. Not 3 years at a time

We don't have the fire power to get to the cup, I want to win a cup and we aren't there yet. Our young guns give us a chance once they are ready. I'd rather wait on them than make dumb cap moves to get free agents for the sake of free agents.

There's not a free agent worth taking that would a) play in our top 6/ top 4 and b) only take a 3 years contract.

Free agency won't help us in any significant way beyond filling in small cracked (backup etc)

Hmmm good question, my memory is telling me he's a RW and so are most sources online (CBS, EP, Forecaster). I'd give him a deal similar to Cole back in the day, 3 years @ 16M.

I think he is worth around $6M AAV but more than likely is looking for $7M ish and a 5 year term. He is 32 in Sept so not sure how many teams would go past 3 years.

My issue is adding another RW? I think if I add Zuccarello, we have to unload Shaw

zucharello

how much smaller do you want habs to be

thats just becomes insane and something you can no longer fix for years

Oh I know he is small but he plays with intensity which is important to me. Plus, I would not sign him more than 3 years in term. Am I drolling over signing him? no

If we have the same line up than last year MB is dumb. He needs to fill the cap space with good players if he wants to make playoff. Via trade or UFA. U can’t keep the same team when every team around you are improving

The Habs actual lineup was in place for what? 15-20 games? near the end of the season,so they upped their game and the PP was top in the same span.

There aren't much targets that I'd like in UFA as they are mostly depth players and we have so many of them. Ideally, we would trade players like Drouin, Byron and/or Shaw for LD help, then sign replacements as Zuccarello, Lee, Ferland, Nyquist, Chiasson and/or Simmonds

(not actual lines #, just dropping them)

Tatar - Danault - Gallagher
Nyquist/Lee - Domi - Shaw
Lehkonen - Kotkaniemi - Armia
Poehling - Thompson - Weal
Peca, Deslauriers

Mete - Weber
Trade D (Klefbom?) - Petry
Kulak - Juulsen
Folin, Olofsson

Price - Lindgren

Weise and Alzner in AHL

I'd probably look at Stralman (ideally) if Juulsen isn't health or depth players like Lovejoy, Engelland or Girardi

The plan isn't to contend anyway, let players like Suzuki and the Ds develop in the AHL. I would bring in guys like Chiasson, Simmonds or Ferland only if we feel like Poehling should start in the AHL or if Armia doesn't sign with us.

Let's play a game. I want you guys to predict what you think our starting lineup is going to be, injuries aside . Key word here is "predict". Its not about what you wish, but about what you think our team will look like after all summer moves.

Here's my guess;

Drouin - Domi - Shaw
Tatar - Danault - Gallagher
Lehkonen - Kotkaniemi - Armia
Byron - Thompson - Tanev

Mete - Weber
Kulak - Petry
Gunnarson - Juulsen

Price
McElliney

I think you probably got the right lineup. THis said i don't think there's any reality where Jordan Weal doesn't start at least on the 4th line.

Just signing Nyquist to get to this roster should be doable. And, just for the hell of making sure it fit under the cap I gave him a raise and the cap space is still there. I also extended Armia and Lehkonen for 3 M each and resigned Reilly 1M.
Remove Nyquist and its probably what we will see in October.

The question should be; what have Lehkonen and Armia done in their careers to get paid almost as much as Danault, and, to a certain restent, Byron?

2 250 000 a piece is as high as I would go for them

Its kinda funny to say but getting a reliable backup is important. As we have seen it can be the difference between making and missing the playoffs.

Boring, but I don't see us picking anyone up before the year starts. Suzuki in Laval.

I think it's a market inefficiency tbh. The price of a quality backup is less than their impact relative to other holes in a roster.

Keeping Price to ~ 55 games is key, and we really couldn't afford to do that with Niemi this year - And that's with Price missing a bit of time with injury to boot.

Drouin Domi Byron
Lehkonen Kotkaniemi Armia
Weal Poehling Shaw

Suzuki
Caufield

*I think a player like Anders Lee might help us. He brings size, and leadership.

Mete Weber
Kulak Petry
Juulsen Frolin

Brook
Fleury

*I think we need to address the LD on free agency week. A player while you may not like Jake Gardiner could fit. Ben Chiarot could be a bottom pairing defenseman.

Price
Lindgren
Primeau

*Bring in Cam Talbot or Mike Smith to backup Price.

You know Simmonds had 30 points in 79 games and has been on a decline for 2 years, right? He also had an atrocious showing with Nashville (1g,3pts in 17 games). You better hope he goes the way of Tatar if we sign him.

The absolute best surprise would be Alzner having worked on his skating some in the offseason to the point where he could make the team.

I don't expect it, but would be nice.

Brings a package (grit, PP specialist in front of the net, leadership, north/south type of play, able to play with players with high IQ that plays a fast pace,...) that Montreal doesn't have in their system. I see his bad year as an opportunity to sign him short term. I think he can thrive in a system like Montreal and players like Domi or Drouin or Kotkaniemi he can complete. Am I sure he will bring it? No, but depending on the price, I can live with the risk considering what he can bring to the table. If he signs 3 years 4M a year and is able to be a 20-25 goal scorer, in my mind, hes worth it considering all the other aspect he brings. With that type of expectation, Im confident he can deliver.
