it could be argued that josi is as valuable to us as weber is at this point. he's become a really good 2 way player, our best puckhandling, breakout, break in defenseman. overall a top 15 defenseman in the NHL

With the advantage that he's a better skater than Weber, which has proven valuable in helping to create a number of goals of late.

His skating really shines. He is really a true two-way defenseman with elite defensive skills and offensive skills. The thing that stands out about Josi is that he excels in all phases:

Good PKer
Good PPer
Good in transition
Good in the offensive zone
Good in the defensive zone
Rarely takes penalties or makes mistakes

He doesn't have the physical game that elevates Weber to a game-breaking talent, but he is a bonafide #1.

It truly is almost the perfect mix (perfection can never be reached).

Josi's foot speed and hands are an even better mix than Suter's IQ and poise, IMHO.

I think there's not much as a pairing they can't handle and together they have very weaknesses.

Just reading through this but it's starting to feel that each of our defenseman, excluding Weber, are playing about a spot below their ceilings with some even lower currently (Jones ).

oh there's plenty of potential still not reached with some of this young d corps. eckholm can be much better in both zones, ellis still needs improvement in the d zone, jones needs more confidence and strength. all three of these guys has the potential to be much better than they are right now. we just have to hope these 3 continue to improve.

I don't think you meant this but I think Josi's IQ is pretty high. May not be as high as Suter's but he's close. One thing I've noticed about his game is when he makes a mistake, he doesn't seem to make it again. Remember the time in the playoffs when Datsyuk picked him clean behind the net and scored? Haven't seen that happen again since. Not saying it should, but his game has been growing each season and even game by game. I remember a few weeks ago he was pretty bad, which was one game in how many, but since then, has been on a massive tear. I think he realized he was bad and elevated his game a notch or two.

These two together make as good a pairing and I remember when Suter left, it wasn't who will replace Suter, I was more worried about who was going to replace Josi. I think we're better off now than we were with this pairing.

Totally agree his IQ is good, Suter's though is off the charts. And now I feel dirty

Don't....lol. My wife asked me the other night if I could have any one player back on this team that's still in the NHL I said Suter. Putting personal feelings aside, it would give us a monstrous back end with the ability to trade one of our chips for the upgrade at center we would need. I may hate him and what he did but if we could pick him up for nothing, obviously not going to happen but related to the question, it would have to be him.

He has better numbers than Pietrangelo if I remember correctly.
Points, blocked shots, etc.
Case could be made for the all-star team.......

The team is presently leading the NHL (adjusting the points to the games played) ... the 2nd best team in GAA after after the blackhawks (2.12) with 2.19 ... . That is awesome.

Weber and Josi are 4th and 5th in TOI/game with 26.26 and 26.20 respectively.
The whole defense must be doing something very right.

And thinking that none of them peaked ! That they are their for another 2 yrs (1 yr some)
and that new offensive players are to join next year ...
and that this year the Preds are already leading and actually being a contender for the cup !! (i was thinking it was next year ... but already now ... they are a serious candidate)
Next year even more.

But i am getting out of the thread's topic. Great to see Josi progress like that.
Next target : improve his +/- by sniping the puck beyond the adverse goalie.

3rd in the league for blocked shots, would'nt have thought that to be honest.
He's 13th for Dmen in points, with the least PIM out of the top core but also close to zero hits.
So watching him play despite not being physical at all, he's still a rock defensively. Given his injury record and not forcing the team to play PK I think it's another good sign for his Hockey IQ.
Yes, case could be made for an All Star nomination, I mean someone has to play with Weber there ;)

It would be great for us, but I don't think so.

And to be honest, I don't hope so for himself...

Great to see Josi playing that good on a very nice team.:handclap:

presently Josi has 55 points, and 206 block shots.

higher than Suter ever had and in 2 points, it will be higher than Weber ever had.

What is also interesting is that Weber scored more points since he is paired with Josi than when he was paired with Suter.

this year, together they scored 100 points and last year 96 points. This year is better than the all time high with Sutter in 2008-9 at 98 points.

In fact Weber achieved his all time high in points scored last year ...with Josi as binome.

So not only Josi scored more than Suter but Weber is also doing better when paired with Josi.

That is the quantitative approach.

Qualitatively ... you can see that Josi is simply impressive in the playmaking ... also he establishes pretty nicely the PP by dangling through the opposition defense ... to me he is "l'éminence grise", the one that makes the game in the shadow.

For a specialist ... he could be a contender for a "best D". Yet i do not know the specificities of the Vezina and how the voting guys think (american journalists are very conventional wisdom driven IMO). Then i do not know the other contenders a part of Suban who is amazing but in my view does not impact the game as much as Josi does.
