That's pretty cheap, they could keep Raanta if Raanta doesn't hate the idea of being pushed a bit by the backup.

I'm not sure on the value of Rieder for Kuemper though, seems a little LA slanted.

Kuemper is not chopped liver. Wingers are easy to replace, and you win from the net out and if we can get Raanta signed we will have an excellent 1-2 punch.

I play in a summer golf group with Kuemper, He's a good guy that will fit in well. Very down to earth and well aware if his ability and where he fits, a great backup who can carry the load if required for shorter lengths. I like the idea of him backing up Raanta. 2 goalies under $6 million total is good value.

I like the trade. I agree with Chayka's quotes completely, you need two goalies and rieder. while fairly effective, should be pretty easy to replace. As long as Raanta doesn't cost too much I really like our goalie tandem and it's value vs cap space.

I do think 1.8 mill is a bit much and more of a gamble than Raanta at 4 mill.

I like the deal and I'm glad Rieder is gone. This is a move that saves the Coyotes from themselves. Now we don't have to see them forcing him on one of the top two lines or on the PP. Loved him as a 4th liner and PK specialist and I think that's all he'll ever be no matter what his agent thinks. I'd love it if we moved on from one or two more JAGs on the roster.

I thought the same thing, it makes me think Raanta contract might be more than I expected.
I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that unless negotiations go really well with Raanta agent over next 2-3 days that he may be dealt. The comments today by Chayka were made to provide reassurance to Raanta but there was a side order of "we have other options if you choose to be a prick".

calms my nerves, thank God for Bob

This calms your nerves? All this says to me is that the agent is playing Chayka for a fool. "Mr. GM, let's discuss this in March or April (when we have all the leverage)" Come April the agent tweets "We really tried to get a deal done but the sides were just too far apart. At this time, we are going to free agency and we will see what happens."

it does calm my nerves, yes. I mean you may be right, but the fact that trusted sources seem confident a deal is going to be made is telling, and you have to take 3 things into consideration:

1. Raanta didn't have a ton of playing time, they aren't going to start talking an extension until he can show he can put together a decent string of games, and his injuries are going to play into his negotiations.

2. Raanta has built an impressive streak of games, proving himself (so to speak) but it lands right in the busiest time of the year for every GM. Chayka probably not looking to discuss negotiations until after this week is over.

3. All 3 sides seem to have vocally expressed the one common interest of extending in Arizona.

Sometimes it's in the nature of a Coyote's fan to read too much into things, I get it.

I like this deal. Wedgewood came in highly touted but couldn't replicate his New Jersey success here. I wouldn't be surprised if LA runs him to the AHL and brings up one of their prospects to back up Quick.

Rieder... well, Chayka basically got rid of Boedker 2.0. Talented two-way guy with a great scoring touch but an inability to finish, with a PITA agent asking ridiculous money and/or term. I find it pretty funny that we've now dumped two of this type of player onto California teams. :D

I think this is a good trade. Kuemper is having a strong year and he's about to enter his prime. He's pretty decent in handling the puck too. He should form part of a solid 1-2 tandem with Raanta and certainly is nice insurance to have in case we can't keep Raanta.

Moving Reider also partly addresses our logjam at LW.

This is a very smart move by Chayka. We don't need Reider, he is easy to replace like most 3rd line PK wingers. We needed an upgrade over Wedge and with Kuemper we have it. If they sign Raanta great, if they don't we have insurance. We could now have a 1B/2A goal tending tandem with competition for minutes, I like that. Chayka won't over pay or give too much term for Raanta, 3 years 3-3.5 mill is my guess. I believe this puts Chayka in a better negotiating position with Raanta, although I think Raanta gets market value regardless from us or somebody else.

Nice move, imo. I think it's 4-fold
  1. Kuemper is a solid bu if we re-sign Raanta
  2. Good tandem if we re-sign Raanta and he continues to have injury issues
  3. Good tandem if we trade (or don't re-sign) Raanta, opening up options for signing/acquiring another goalie
  4. With Kuemper re-negotiated for a decent amount, we could possibly trade him at some point in the next 2 seasons if a team faces a long-term injury to a starter

In terms of Rieder's position, we don't really need to acquire/sign another LW with our depth.
  1. Move Domi back to LW (if we acquire another C)
  2. Bring up Crouse
Domi - NEW C (may not be 1C)/Stepan - Keller
Perlini - Stepan/NEW 2C - Fischer
Crouse - Dvorak - Panik/Cousins
Martinook - Richardson - Rinaldo/Archibald/Hamilton

I suppose we could let Crouse finish the season in Tucson as well and move Cousins to LW
3rd: Cousins - Dvorak - Panik/Archibald
4th: Martinook - Richardson - Rinaldo/Hamilton
Or (without acquiring a new C)
Domi/Perlini - Stepan - Keller
Perlini/Domi - Dvorak - Fischer
Crouse - Strome - Panik/Cousins
Martinook - Richardson - Rinaldo/Hamilton

If we can get a 5th for Schenn, that’d cover the loss of the initial Wedgewood trade. And would essentially make this deal Rieder and Schenn for Kuemper.

I don't think he needs a whole thread or anything. But I appreciate that Wedge helped us finally get a win this season :biglaugh:
I have attended 1 game this season: Wedgewood got a shutout and Strome scored. Approximate odds: 3,600:1

Like the trade. As much as it hurts to trade away the NHL's only former member of the Landshut Cannibals, Kuemper is solid. Getting him for Kale Kessy and a 5th is good business :biglaugh:
