If he is carried defensively by a 20-year-old rookie who is not known for his defensive commitment, he must be released.
look, I dont know if you're a Slovak since you're claiming you've been watching Nemec for long long years, but I'll assume you are, since not many people watch foreign 13yo prospects. Yes, I remember that he used to be something of a liability when he was 17 yo playing for the national team- that was the reason he didn't dress for some of the games in the Olympics and I also remember a tying goal in the QT with Finland in WC 2022 after a bad give away from Nemec. But those times are gone, he put the time in getting better defensively in Utica last year and he looks solid in the NHL. That doesn't mean some of the goals against aren't on him, but overall he is not a liability and I can't recall a situation when Siegenthaler had to cover for Simon's fault- maybe you can provide some clips?

Ugh. Why did the Nemec thread go from a Jiricek thread to a Slafkovsky thread.

Nemec has been excellent since his call up. I'll be interested to see how he's deployed as the games start to matter more in the standings. Devils have lots of room under the cap to add at multiple positions. I wouldn't be surprised if they add some veteran defenseman by the deadline.

I mean when he got called up we were tied for 11th in the league. Sure there was still 3/4 of the season left but it’s not like we’ve been able to cruise this year. We’ve either been fighting for the last WC spot or barely holding on his whole time.

If he is carried defensively by a 20-year-old rookie who is not known for his defensive commitment, he must be released.

Or you realize good players can play bad at times or have bad years.

NJ therefore really needs to get rid of Siegenthaler and find another teammate for Nemec.

Why do they “really need” to do that when Nemec is playing incredibly well as is?

Firstly, I was probably one of the first to anticipate the resurrection of Slovak hockey on this site. So, when you and many others were unaware of the existence of Slafkovsky and Nemec, I was already aware of their level. I must have known him well since he was 15.

Secondly, you are making me say things that I did not say. Nemec is paired with the team's best defender, that's all I said. And yes the role of a defensive back is to cover an offensive back.

Slafkovsky plays on the 1st line. He is currently the best player in Montreal. He carries his line in the engagement Nemec is still under the tutorship of Siegenthaler, who covers his game and Luke Hughes is favored in the offensive phases.

I have known and watched Simon Nemec for a very long time. I know he needs to have a solid guy defensively alongside him to perform. If Siegenthaler isn't that guy, NJ will have to find a competent guy in the next 10 years.

You didn't simply state he plays with the best defender, you're claiming he needs one to perform- which I argue isn't true anymore.

As far as the dick measuring of who's been watching him play for longer goes, Nemec being the first NHL prospect from my hometown since Milan Jurcina, I've also been watching him for a while. Not that any of this matter at all, we are talking about how he's playing right now. Congrats on calling the Slovak hockey renaissance, I'm not so sure we're out of the woods yet (but this is not the right place to discuss that).

I don't really see the problem. Which offensive back can perform next to an unstable guy ? Considering that the Siegenthaler level did not seem sufficient for the user. I defended Siegenthaler's level.

Nemec is going to be NJs cornerstone dman. He's that good. He's a whole tier above Luke Hughes. Nemec already plays like he's a veteran and he wears his heart on his sleeve. He can play PP, PK, and be put in any situation & stand out as the best player on the ice. He doesn't make mistakes either. It's crazy how good he is for a 19 year old rookie. I can't even imagine in 2-3 years what he looks like. As of this moment he gets picked #1 in a redraft quite easily. I haven't seen a dman rookie look like this in idk how long. He has no weaknesses. A true #1 Dman in every sense of the word. It's not often you get a player like this. When Hamilton returns, Hamilton is getting demoted to the 2nd pairing.

I belive they will play different roles. Nj lacks of offense now and its obvious Hamilton impact was huge. But Nemec will eat a of of minutes to play against better competition in D zone and N zone starts. With Marino as a main D zone specialist Devils will balance and will improve their game. 38 mil can help to be better ofcourse. But Nemec is one of the players who is helping to keep Devils above the water now.

This kid is also sneaky strong as Marchand found out when he took him to the ground.

He’s going to be an absolute beast in a couple years when his body matures. He has that snarl and looks like a stone cold killer when he is pissed off.
God help us when he gets a beard.

I 100% agree with this entire statement. You sir have a great eye for defensive talent. Nemec is one of the most amazing young D I have ever seen. I might go as far as to say he is a young modern Lidstrom in the making. Shame Hughes is keeping him of pp1 because he 100% belongs there.

Yup fully agreed. He should definitely be on the top PP. Only reason why he isn't is because Luke has the last name Hughes. Nemec is going to be a really special player and NJ is so lucky to have him.

Hate to sound fatalistic, but after watching last night's game can't help thinking he's going to struggle to flourish if he stays with New Jersey.

Even with Hamilton in the lineup, the Devils are a tire fire when it comes to positional play. And it's clear they are either unable (or unwilling) to hold certain players accountable or teach them to play position.
