Can any OHL watchers add some colour to this thread? Does Wood have the skating ability to be an NHL player?

Skating is going to be his biggest issue but he should be able to work on it in the AHL, he needs to also be more consistent in using his size. Most folks probably aren't aware how hot his shot is, it's just a cannon. When he sets up on the left side on the PP it just can't be stopped.

Even if never adds a physical side to his game, just cleaning up his skating would be enough with that shot to become a dangerous NHLer.

He looked very good. Very poised and good with the puck. Skating still needs work, but if that improves I don't see how he doesn't become a good NHL Dman

Yeah, and his skating has already improved by leaps & bounds since he was drafted. So you know he's putting the work in to elevate that part of his game.

My biggest concern with Wood was how soft he played, but with his shot & skill; that's fine. He's no softer than Franson & he's carved out an NHL career for himself.

noticed he is AHL leading dman scorer and only 2 points off the league lead in points while only playing 3 games so far

Very little chatter on him on here.... flukey start? or is this guy legit to be a point getter on defense

He's legit. the lack of talk was because he was an Avs prospect and now a yotes one. If he had been drafted by the leafs there would be thread II by now. His shot is Shea Weber caliber and his only flaw in junior was his skating which keeps improving. He'll be at the very least a 3rd pairing d-man who plays #1 PP and PK. He'll probably be a 2nd pairing guy. He'll still need the whole year in the AHL but by next year he should challenge for an NHL spot full-time

A little crazy, but Tucson has played three games and has only scored seven goals.
Currently Wood has points on six of the seven goals!

The only question is whether he can be a successful NHL player whether he can reach the 150 point plateau

He was very impressive in drills at camp, less and less in games and scrimmages. Still very excited about him though, tools are all there.

His only flaw wasn't skating. There was also the whole playing his size thing, and the dedication concerns.

But yeah, he has the skills to be a better version of Franson.

From what I've seen, he has excellent offensive instincts and puck skills. I've noticed that his edgework is quite weak though and something that needs work. When pressured to use his edges against forecheckers he tends to lose balance

That's what I always saw in him, he's basically Franson with the chance of it going worse or better depending on his development. I was not super happy they traded him away, and less so when they didn't retain Boedker.

Has been named AHL rookie of the month with 2G+6A in 5 games

His canon of a shot is right at home in the AHL. Might make it as a PP specialist alone with that thing. Coyotes have a dedicated skating coach (Dawn Braid) working with the team and Tucson, so it will be interesting to see how his mobility improves over the year and into next camp.

With the way the RD have been playing and injured on the Coyotes, he will probably get a callup at some point.

Has the 6th highest point total in all of AHL(AHL has him 20th in league scoring but there are a lot of people tied)

3rd in AHL Dmen scoring while playing 5-6 games less than the dmen ahead of him

2nd in AHL rookie scoring(1 point behind the leader and 3 less games played)

Stats wise he looks impressive!!!!!

whats his knock? anything????

when will he get some NHL time??

lets hear your thoughts Yotes fans!!

Yote fans were told that Wood wasn't even worth signing after we dealt for him :)

He just needs to learn to be a pro, get stronger, improve skating, and most importantly get used to speed of pro game. AZ currently has about 8 first or second year players in lineup including DeAngelo and Chychrun. With injuries there will come opportunity. I/ when Stone is moved that might free up a spot in rotation.

I don't know who was telling you that he wasn't worth signing. Most Avs fans weren't happy they traded away Wood, he was the only **** we were upset about for the most part.

I remembered this came from Sakic himself, dug a bit and found it:

Chambers saying something =/= being told he's not worth signing. Again, most Avs fans are upset we dealt him

Skating and mobility isn't NHL level yet but the Coyotes have a fulltime skating coach for that. Everything else is bueno.
