That's not how you spell Vesey.

Vesey can't be signed by anybody but Nashville until August.

I don't know anything about Chapie. I suspect he must skate fairly well. His size isn't bad. 3rd on this team in scoring--2nd in goals. The 24 year old bit isn't entirely encouraging. He'll need to make an impression pretty quick.

Morrison is too young, no?

An Amateur Try Out (ATO) is found in the NHL, the AHL, and the ECHL. This type of contract is for players who are leaving college and attempting to turn professional, are done with college, or are graduating from the junior leagues

Gropp might get one, since he already signed his ELC. Morrison will stay in the WHL for at least another year

Don't we have a ton of open contracts for next season? Its a no loose situation we give the guy a shot on a one year deal, there are plenty of guys wasting space in hartford that don't have any shot to make the NHL, we'll see if this kid does.

Don't we also have a ton of open contract spots for next season?

Not my best creation, but with Mobile PS it's the best I could do at this moment:

Don't know too much about him. I know he grinds and goes to the front of the net a lot!!

Here's a player profile....

Why do people think a 24-year-old with decent stats in the NCAA has a better chance of success than a 22-year-old or 23-year-old with decent ECHL stats? You realize that the ECHL is better than the NCAA right? Chapie is going up against players who are mostly 2-6 years younger and who for the most part won't be good enough for pro hockey. St Croix and Nicholls are playing grown men who were all good enough to turn pro. Your average ECHL team would crush your average NCAA team.

People think a guy who has not had a chance at the pro-level has a better chance than a guy who has already had that chance for 3 years and proved he does not have what it takes.

Ah okay. So then I have a better chance? Since I haven't had a chance to pro hockey?

Look, this kid comes from the college level and who knows what might happen. It's a 2-year deal for 800k AAV. That is not much of a risk. If he replaces STC, the worst that can happen is that he is just as bad

Have the Rangers ever signed an undrafted NCAA player who actually played a meaningful number of games (please don't say Matt Gilroy)?

Yes, he was a valuable role player who was excellent when called upon, we traded him for future assets. Great signing.

It's not a matter of thinking Chapie has a "better" chance of success that someone like St. Croix. Guys like St. Croix, Nicholls, McCarthy, and so on, they've shown what they can do as pros. They're ECHL-caliber guys. That's fine, but not something we need on an NHL SPC. We give a contract to Chapie because there's hope still that he can become something more than St. Croix or Nicholls et al.

This is absolutely awful logic. Shockingly bad, really. Those players you cited already failed. Period. A guy like this hasn't had a chance to fail in the pros. There is a whole litany of players who outplayed their NCAA/juniors stats in the AHL or even NHL. The guys you cited are absolute scrubs at the pro level.

Will Chapie be anything? Who knows? But it's not like he is already a failed pro.

Nobody has explained why there's any hope that Chapie becomes an NHLer. "He hasn't had a chance to fail yet" is true for literally anyone in the NCAA. That doesn't mean that literally every NCAA player has hope of making it.
