Thanks. Southeast US is the part no one in the family visited thus far, so I gotta know some stuff before going on a trip... after I finish school and get some good hospital place.

Grandfather Mountain is a lot of fun. The bridge gives me the willies though. I don’t do well with heights

One time we went it was super foggy. That was really cool.

This is perhaps google-level obvious, but if you’re planning an adventure in the mountains it would be a good idea to look into the Blue Ridge Parkway and/or the Appalachian Trail. They’re the main routes for drivers (BRP) and hikers (AT) to tour up and down the mountain chain, and deliver you to various points of interest along the way.

I CAN USE GOOGLE, BUT THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT INTERACTING WITH AN ACTUAL PERSON. THANK YOU.

An old buddy of mine wrote a very vulgar song many years ago entitled "Mile High Swinging Bridge". I can never think of Grandfather Mountain now without thinking of that song.

I'd like to get back into playing hockey- looking at the PAHL South leagues.. no idea what league to sign up for. In Columbia SC I played in the B league (there was just an A, B, C) - is there a pickup game or another route for figuring which league to sign up for?

Definitely check out an intermediate c game or two first as suggested above. PAHL tends to have a pretty wide skill divide even at lower levels.

Thanks, guys- I'll check out a game. Grew up playing travel inline but didn't try ice until after college.

Hey all, just a heads up but I'm in the process of updating the OP - if you see any spots that have opened since the last major revamp a year/year and a half ago, please let me know. Similarly if there's some place that looks like it's disappeared, let me know via PM in case there's any problems with editing the page (as opposed to me removing a place because it's closed)

I mean, the things involving things to do in DT Durham involve alcohol so I can't help you there. You could always visit the Life and Science Museum which is a little bit north of DT, haven't been there in years but it's a good way to kill a few hours.

Bull City Mini is a (mostly) indoor minigolf course where all the holes are Durham themed - only 7 holes but it's a fun way to burn 30-45 minutes.

Go to The Parlour for ice cream

Grab lunch at either Bull City Burger or its pizza-slinging sister, Pompieri and marvel at the table numbers which bear trivia and facts about the city itself (Bull City) or its fire department's history (Pompieri).

Get some ink at one of Durham's amazing tattoo shops (assuming you're 18 and ink's your thing) - I recommend Sacred Mandala, but Ethereal, Choice, and the OG Durham spot, Dogstar, are all solid places to go. Most will probably have some mid-day walk-in time.

Check out the Duke Lemur Center

Go to Boxcar and play some old school arcade games

Walk up and down 9th Street and check out the shops.

If you brought your swim trunks head over to The Unscripted and check out their rooftop pool.

If you are into outdoor activities, check out the Doris Duke Gardens if you haven't already on your Campus tour. Or head North to the Eno River State Park. If you are into Civil War history, go to Bennett Place.
