People really need to read threads more carefully. Several posters explained above how Pitlick's arbitration rights made qualifying him risky. Just read the damn thing!
IMO, it didn't really make him risky. He was tradeable, even if overpaid slightly. Someone would have taken a chance on a 40 point player on a 1-year deal. It was never going to be risky.

The only reasons I can think of that you don't even bother is because there's a lot of moves in the works and it wasn't worth the man power to just gain a mid round pick. And that they probably wanted Ylonen on the roster over Pitlick to see what Ylonen can do.

I like that they kept Montembault. In my mind, he could be another Denis Herron i.e. a good bad team goalie. The guy got shelled a lot of nights and he wasn't the main reason the team lost so many games.

I wonder where they see Schnarr fitting on the team?
Schnarr is an AHL guy for now. But he's still got potential to be a late bloomer and he's got really good size, which is where they want to go. He could potentially develop into a nice player. Very good 2-way player, so I think they see him as maybe a 20-point 4th line C type. Could be a good replacement if Evans moves up to the 3rd line and we move Dvorak.

MA Godin wrote in The Athletic that it's because Pitlick has Arb Rights that Habs opted not to qualify him.

They know if they go to the arbitrator, Pitlick has a good argument to get what he's asking for.

If the Habs would be able to make room on the cap with some moves and Pitlick doesn't get what he's looking for, the Habs would be willing to extend him.

The more interesting question, though, is why there is no thread about us signing Pezzetta? It's out there on the main board.
There is a thread for Pezzzz

It's an interesting year for RFAs not being signed. I think the flat cap has a lot to do with these management decisions.

It's always funny to see the GMs being so stingy about overpaying their players a few hundred k, and being willing to let them go for free. Then a few days later UFA period comes along and 2nd/3rd liners get way overpaid.

Couldn't we just walk away if Arb. Gave Pitluck too much?

And MB/Timmins drafted his clone Norlinder and tried yet again with another clone Niku
Sounds like you giving up on Nordlinder kind of quick

Yes, the club has the option to reject the arbitrator's ruling and the player becomes UFA.

But as a team, if you realize that the player will most likely get more of what he wants than what the team wants, then there is no reason to go through the process.

Overpriced wingers we have in abundance.
Pitlick at the end of the day was waiver fodder

They can only walk away if the ruling exceeds $4.5M

If he can continue to play like he did last year over 82 games, I wouldn't consider him over priced at 3-3.5M on a 1 year deal.

But since we have a ton of unmovable vets who are in fact overpriced, and he's not the type you use draft picks to move out vets to make room for, have to let him walk.

Dahlen would be interesting if we didn't already have a thousand forwards under contract.....
