Well not really a bold position to be in with the Leafs sitting 16th in the league in points. Very much in that middle zone of the league.

It was interesting that the Leafs ranking wasn't very good while their record was.

Is Fenwick Close meaningless I wonder?

The Blackhawks earlier on in the season are the perfect example. They look like they got it under control now but imagine that happened in the playoffs. When it matters :amazed:

Leafs move up to 12th. from 15th.

The underlying numbers remain a concern, but there's nothing wrong with banking points and the Leafs are 9-1-1 in the past 11 games and part of the reason for it, aside from goaltending, is production from RW Mike Santorelli, who has 13 points in those 11 games.

Key Injuries: D Roman Polak (ankle), LW Leo Komarov (concussion).

S.A. CORSI%: 45.2% -- about 4th. worst in the league.

Hottest team in the league, just beat the best team in the league.

only good enough for 12th place.

instead of keeping score of who actually wins games, they just track corsi

The 6 game streak has all been against top teams. 2 back to backs as well.

Some of you guys need to read the posts from the first page of this thread. A lot of complaints that the Leafs was to low then (a year ago), that the Rangers, Habs and LA Kings was to high. And what happened then? Leafs dropped, Rangers, Habs and LA made it to the last 4 in the Stanley Cup finals.

Power rankings are what they are but they are not completely made up based on opinions alone.

That is why despite our stretch a good to great games there is still some concerns about for how long we can keep it up. Unless we learnt the lesson from previous seasons we will keep repeating the same mistakes. I dont see an epic collapse like previously on the horizon but that does not mean I am not worried.

No reason to not enjoy the good games however and hope the team, even is ever so slowly, correct what is wrong and becomes even better.

Don't mind it. Leafs have played good enough to be on the streak they are on but they can be so much better if they play more consistently.

I'd like to say to those people who make up these rankings: Winning two sets of back to backs isn't easy, especially against top teams.

Sportsnet has us 3rd, I'm on mobile or I'd link it here. I think we're somewhere in between 3 and 12 at the moment...8th sounds good to me. You have to respect the hot streak but the underlying defensive numbers are still ugly.

Toronto and Montreal are the only 2 teams in the top 14 that have a S.A CORSI% < 50%.

Both teams heavily rely on goaltending to win.

Bernier has been great ever since he joined the Leafs and Price is Price, a top 5 goalie.

Bernier is the only reason why I feel that the Leafs can make some noise in the playoffs provided they make it.

A hot goalie + high scoring offense is absolutely lethal.

don't look at NHL.com as of Dec 12th we weren't even in the top 16, that better change in tomorrow's release. 3 points away from being the best in the East.

i hate when media outlets do this. these are not "power rankings" - call them monthly rankings or something because you are abusing the term.

if these were truly power rankings there is no way you could justify having the leafs any lower than 5.

A true "power ranking" would rank the Leafs #1, they are the hottest team right now, that can't be rationally disputed, next week, next month that will probably change, but right now the Leafs power rank is 1.

How the heck is Columbus 5 spots ahead of us? We're 7 points ahead, even though they have 2 games in hand, and no team in the league has been as hot as us the past little while (though there are some comparable).

Montreal I can at least understand since they're technically ahead, even though 6 spots seems a bit much given how close we are.

Fact of the matter is, our Leafs are prone to the big nose dive at some point mid to late season. I think TSN is taking this into consideration when deriving their rankings.

It's up to the team to disprove this ranking by NOT COLLAPSING AT ALL this season!

As Dr. Phil would say 'Previous behavior is an indicator for future behavior.' ;)

The interesting bit there was that the Leafs went 3-0 in a week and somehow dropped from the rankings, whereas the Canucks and Flames were on 3 or 4 game losing streaks, having lost all games that week, and moved up...

Why do advanced stats need to be added to everything this year.

If used well, so that analysts have a means to keep track of effects which may not be readily visible on the score sheet, but which indicate a team's fortunes could change in the future.

If not used well, as a means to support an arbitrary and sometimes unfounded opinion, by asserting that based on a cherry picked stat typically lacking a lot of context, X will most certainly come true.

Eyesight makes a bad eyewitness as everyone sees what they want to see.

That stats don't lie when used correctly to help determine what they were gathered for in the first place.

not all the time.

every year we hear how much the Leafs PDO will 'drop off' but it doesn't. and the fact that the Leafs as a team, have an incredibly high PDO (even if their shots against were to be even 15th-20th, advanced stats would most likely say it's unsustainable, but it isn't (in this regards because for thelast 3-4 years our PDO has been extremely high).

but no one ever counts that in our favour.
