Montreal down to St. Louis, NYI up on the Rangers

When was the last time we were good enough to actually care about other teams results for non-tanking/draft-related purposes?

Looks like the Caps are the honorary Sabres for the evening as far as getting hosed down by a partial ref shutdown on calling penalties against the Bruins. Still, up 2-1 after 2.

Keep an eye on Columbus, especially with the Bob situation and if they decide to move Panarin at the deadline. Could easily fall into the wild card picture if the Isles keep up their play. Currently leading Nashville 1-0.

Carolina has a couple games in hand and are currently streaking. They'd need to stay on their tear to make up the ground. Currently leading Tampa 1-0.

Isles win. Columbus wins. Argh. Hopefully a Montreal loss will give us a small bit of breathing room...although the Canes are making a charge and beating Tampa too.

That Carolina loss is actually pretty nice for us. Incredibly deflating way to lose and a loss to us would probably put an end to any playoff hopes.

Those 3 points Carter Hutton pissed away trying to show off his puck handling skills really annoy me right now. We would be up 4 points on Montreal with 2 games in hand and getting Jack back.

looks like it's gonna be a marathon against the habs/isles/jackets

I like our chances of beating one.

Eh, including tonight, the Sabres have three games left vs the Canes, so a sweep either way can change things dramatically, nipping vs miles, while a split's more of the here and now. Third-period road penalties definitely didn't go Carolina's way last night to end their streak, but NHL officiating is consistent at being inconsistent, nothing new there.

You're good team when the refs are trying to give the Bruins 2 points and they get 0. That's what the Caps did and the Sabres didn't.

I think they played quite bad on Friday and deserved to lose..Hutton was just one of them but certainly not the sole reason.

True, BUF will head into the all-star break with three GIH on MTL, as BUF play six more games to MTL's nine. BUF will be underdogs to TBL and CGY though, so they have to pick up as many points as possible vs NJD, CAR, EDM, VAN or else MTL can certainly get the leg up with their schedule. BUF quickly pulls even in games again with CBJ, DAL, CHI following the break, so they have to match MTL's record there or they're on the outside on Feb.1, possibly for good. If Eichel's rested until CBJ, ugh... lets hope for some good news there instead.
Update: BUF now have only three games left (EDM, CGY, VAN) ahead of the all-star break, which will take them to 48 GP. After Saturday's loss to TBL, BUF are now 3-4 points behind both BOS and CBJ, who each have four games to play here, taking them to 49 and 48 GP respectively. Meanwhile, BUF's more direct wildcard competition at the moment each have more games to play here: MTL (5 to 51 GP), NYI (6 to 49), and CAR (6 to 50). This, of course, is an opportunity for those three teams to create some separation (MTL, NYI) or close ground (CAR), with NYI's two games-in-hand also getting played out here. Yes, BUF will have significant GIH on MTL (3) and CAR (2) at the break, but also will quickly pull even/close in games again following the break (CBJ, DAL, CHI).

CAR (vs NSH) won the first of their six games here to close their gap with BUF to only three points, while CBJ (vs NYR) and NYI (vs TBL) look to separate later today with any points. Tomorrow, MTL at BOS adds to their separation with any result, well for a few hours anyway, until BUF can try to get that back at EDM. CAR, CBJ, NYI wins, plus a three-point MTL win, is the worst scenario ahead of tomorrow's late faceoff.

It feels like it could get ugly really fast for this team. I think anyone paying attention to the metrics could see Carolina coming. They're well coached, and sneaky talented.

We're in for a huge dog fight from here on out. Need to get some of these games to OT, at the very least. This weekend was a huge blow to the team to come away with 0. Need to get 5 out of 6 on this road trip IMO.

Wow Tampa just phoned this one in. Anyone remember that game from the mid 80's where the Whalers killed the Gretzky era Oilers 11-0 at the Civic Center? Yeah, could be a night like that.

Islanders are on fire. Seem to be scoring at a crazy high rate and on like every shot they take. And getting amazing goaltending at the same time. Good combo for them. Pulling away from us fast.

They phoned in the first period last night even worse but the Islanders are a better team than us and made them pay.
