At least Pittsburgh is losing..but I have no faith that we could sustain a lead over Pittsburgh for the duration of the season

I don't even check this thread anymore. I just go ahead and assume every team we needed to lose has won.

    Montreal - Loss
    Boston - Loss

Remain 5 points back of both but with games in hand (2 - MTL, 1 - BOS). A good night for the out of town scoreboard for once.

Pittsburgh lost as well, they are in the thick of this Atlantic/WC race as well and Toronto is just a few points from being out of a playoff spot themselves.

Call up Smith and one of Nylander and Olofsson.

Toronto's paltry 9-9-2 record over their last 20 has at least put them in the conversation. They are 6 ahead of Buffalo, with no games in hand.

Kind of annoys me that we're ranked #14 in the league (in points, and points per game) but 5 points out of the playoffs

    **** the East man

Our current record is a shade over a 92 point pace. We need to regroup and focus on getting that to 96. Things will change with other teams between now and late March with respect to how that pace will look for the playoffs, and we can't possibly predict how and with which teams. We will have interesting games in March if we can fix ourselves, without the stress of microanalyzing the schedule every night, which I don't blame anyone for doing.

5 of our last 8 are against DET/OTT/NJ, with other games against CBJ, NYI, and MON right around then as well. Fix ourselves and we can have some fun.

We are still very much in it. It’s going to come down the the head-to-head matchups against the other wildcard/bubble teams.

If the Leafs end up falling out of a playoff spot I would laugh so hard.

So would I, but being near the END of your rough stretch at 29-17-2 makes that not much of a concern really

Who says they are near the end of their rough stretch? I hope it lasts until the end of the season.

Their roster and head coach. Not verbally, I just mean, everything about this team suggests they'll be fine.

There is a very real possibility that the last 21 games are what the Sabres are, given the recent history of the team and its components. The same case cannot be made for Toronto

They are a good team, but defense is suspect and Andersen has given them A+ goaltending the past couple of years. They play high event hockey with a lot of chances at both ends, and if their scoring cools off, or their goaltending is average they will crash. It happened in the playoffs last year. Andersen went sub-.900 save percentage and Matthews scored 1 goal in 7 games. They got bounced in the first round.

They are a lot like the post-lockout Sabres. Miller stood on his head and allowed them to play that style.

We aren't talking about their flaws, we were talking about the likelihood of that team falling out of the playoffs. A core that has amassed a 118-70-24 record, most of which is without Tavares who they now have, is not very likely to fall out of a playoff spot after an extended bad stretch has them at 29-17-2, no matter how fun that would be

Can't wait for the 7 game home stretch.

Just gotta get through Dallas tomorrow.

2 points back of Pittsburgh, 3 back of Columbus, 5 back of Montreal with 2 games in hand.

We're still in the thick of it.

Absolutely. We just have to get consistent. Tonight was not a consistent effort, but it was enough to win. Clean up some of the garbage and we’re back in playing shape with a nose for the playoffs. There’s absolutely no reason we can’t qualify.
