This is so spot on. He doesn’t want to be a backup, he wants to start. Not to mention you could put out a full blown press release from the team stating he’s only here to be the backup and that would never stop his cult from crying and pining for him to start every time Jarry let’s a puck last him. It’s all just completely unnecessary drama and there is zero good reason to do it...Sid, Geno and Letang can just get over it if they miss their buddy...this is a business
This honestly shouldn't even be brought up. It's an awful idea.

Why not see how CDS plays before throwing him over for somebody else? Again back up goalies aren't hard to come by. Give CDS a chance and see how things play out.
Because backups are going to be playing a lot more than usual with another condensed season coming up. The NHL talking heads are already stating to expect a ton of back-2-back games. There is alot of UFA goalies in the market that can be had for free and I rather not expend another draft pick when CDS fails.

How do you know he's gonna fail? Or, is it you want him to fail for some reason? Maybe you have some sort of agenda, yes?

But again, he literally would not sign here if he was upset with that role. There is not a scenario where he'd sign here and be pissed that his role isn't bigger, because he'd be willingly making a decision to come to a team with a good young goalie coming off an all-star year.

Like you can come up with legit reasons to say no to Fleury. Acting like he'd cause problems in the locker room because of his role isn't among those problems. If he was pissed about not being a starter, he's not even considering coming back to Pittsburgh. There isn't a scenario where he comes back to Pittsburgh while being a malcontent about his role.

I think we should sign a veteran to backup Jarry or even with the idea of splitting with Jarry, like Talbot. Don’t have a problem with DeSmith but why risk one of the few remaining years in our Cup window on less-than-proven starter and a solid (but not starter-capable) backup? We’d be an illness, slump or injury away from a total write-off season.

I’m not saying he would cause locker room problems...I’m saying he wouldn’t consider signing here to be a backup so even exploring it is dumb in general

We still have McCann for that.

If McCann is our biggest issue next season we lift the cup.

Petterson IMO is the most important piece. If he can lift his game to give us a legit top 4 that would be massive. If he doesn't, we'll be an underwhelming 1st round washout again.

Hey! This is serious business.

My mom’s side is like the Gambino crime family and won’t let you out.

You wouldn’t believe what I had to go through to stop going to their traditional Christmas Eve parties that made my wife so miserable.

- Ya guys I’m uh... out

- No you aren’t...

- Ya for real, I can’t do...

- The family will be very displeased

- Ya...

- Vinny and Knuckles will be escorting you to the party this year.

- ......

It’s the most serious business for some reason. Christmas Eve parties might be the worst idea ever. Yeah, we’ll go home from work, get ready, drive out in December with a bunch of tired, stressed out people doing the same thing to spend time with tired, stressed out people half of whom you don’t really know. Hang around, make awkward small talk, see who gets trapped into staying longer, etc. btw, see some of you tomorrow.

Every year, knowing I didn’t want to go, my grandmother who also didn’t want to go but denied it for over a decade, “so did you have a good time?” I lie and say yes, thus perpetuating the cycle well into adulthood. It eventually ended and it was a joyous occasion.

We could acquire one mid-season if DeSmith sucks. Of course it might be pricey potentially, but I would prefer to have some breathing room in cap space in the near term.

We need to find a quality 3C, period. Hopefully that coincides with McCann leaving.

By any metric, Pettersson was a top 4 defenseman last year in the regular season and playoffs.

Maybe. We could also always trade them if Jarry looks good.

DeSmith's shown he can carry the load for a decent amount of time. He played 36 games in his last season with the Pens. The most Murray ever played was 50.

Personally, I'd rather have the cap space now and see if DeSmith can play to his established standard rather than dedicate a decent chunk of change to a veteran who in all likelihood won't be any better. If DeSmith flubs it, those types of goalies aren't exactly hard to find or difficult to acquire.

He didn't push the needle though. Playing the 3rd or 4th most minutes and not getting completely caved in isn't good enough for a cup contender. We need someone that dominates their matchups.
