It's funny that we didn't see these comments about Nylander when he got his extension, since he played a bunch with Matthews. Or Ehlers when he signed, since he played with Schiefele and Wheeler.
well that's because Nylander is an elite 60 point winger who could easily be an elite 1 center on any other team, duh.

Possibly, we wont know. I see him as a mid 6 winger playing with the best player in the world. Now hes getting paid as a top line guy for it. Hes the beneficiary of a good situation.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Sid's really rather good, but he can't consistently elevate a player like that unless they've got something in their own right. I think Guentzel would be a prized asset anywhere. I guess we'll see as time goes on.

Initially I thought the price was high, but after looking at this actual stats I'm with the majority that it's a good deal. 48 in 82 for his first full season and now 33 in 36, he'll definitely beat his record for a season. And yeah, everyone knows his playoff success. Good deal for Pitts.
Yea if anything i think the 48 in 82 was a bit of a learning experience for him due to the grind of the season. He's certainly more than a 48 point player. So far he's at:

Reg season
16-17 : 33 points in 40 games
17-18 : 48 points in 82 games
18-19: 33 points in 36 games

Playoffs
16-17 : 21 points in 25 games
17-18 : 21 points in 12 games

That makes sense, its easy to forget the difficulty to find that kind of fit for a winger for Crosby, and he has done well along side him. Thanks for pointing out the season stat too, kind of forgot his first season he had the injury bug

He was actually in the AHL for a lot of his first season. His first season wasn't just his first NHL season, it was his first professional season. He only played half a season in the NHL because the Penguins wanted to give him some time in the AHL, but he was literally too good for the AHL immediately. He has had a few injuries IIRC, I remember he got concussed with a rock of a hit by Ristolainen, but he has been mostly healthy.

People should also remember about Guentzel that he doesn't get top powerplay opportunities much, just because the Penguins have Hornqvist as their net front guy on the top PP unit. Since Guentzel's 1st game in the NHL, he's 52nd in the NHL in ES points and is 36th in ES points/60. For reference, he produces about the same that Marner does at ES.

This is 3 yr RFA 2 yr UFA? When they added Pearson I thought they may end up going fewer years slightly less money. Seems reasonable for 5 yr, I’ll always pay for playoff goals.

Is he? I'd argue not with the way salaries are going. Guys who are making in the $5-$6 million range are guys who score in the 50-point range.

The elite guys are banking way more than $6 million (unless they signed a bargain deal before breaking out).

What a great contract. Given how his season was going (32g/68pt pace at ES), I was worried it was going to be closer to 7m.

Not really, both Nylander and Guentzel are about $500K - $750K overpaid.
That's the way the NHL is trending it seems, but really the cap problems arent created by paying the Guentzels and Nylanders that money, it's paying the Lucics of the league that money that hurts a team

Well, the good thing for the Pens is that he'll always be playing with Crosby. So I don't think it's a huge risk for them if he continues to produce like this. I'm not sure Guentzel on his own is worth $6 million, but given the context, he sure is.

Okay, how about every game since the start of the 2017-2018 season?

Jake Guentzel - 102 points in 130 games (0.78 PPG)
William Nylander - 67 points in 97 games (.69 PPG)

Is that a big enough sample size for you?

How about every game of their careers?

Jake Guentzel - 156 points in 195 games (0.8 PPG)
William Nylander - 145 points in 207 games (0.7 PPG)

Exactly! Based on what Nylander got I thought Jake would get more than 6 mil. I think this is very team friendly.

Just throwing it out there, since Guentzel's first game in the NHL:

Guentzel: 44 goals and 96 points at ES in 158 games, ES points/60 of 2.45
Forsberg: 46 goals and 94 points at ES in 158 games, ES points/60 of 2.50
Huberdeau: 32 goals and 94 points at ES in 148 games, ES points/60 of 2.48
Ehlers: 51 goals and 103 ES points in 179 games, ES points/60 of 2.37
Nylander: 25 goals and 79 points at ES in 154 games, ES points/60 of 2.18

These are just regular season stats, and Guentzel has 23 goals (19 of which are at ES and 1 of which is SH) and 42 points in 37 playoff games.

That goes to tied-11th if you do 5v5 p/60 (1000 minutes or more). Dead even with Scheifele, Panarin and MacKinnon.

Great deal. Those saying he is overpaid need to get their head checked. This deal is more in line with where Nylander should have been.

Kid is a playoff stud. Basically helped them win an SC.

Congrats Pens fans!!!

I don't really understand the bolded argument. Guentzel is a good complimentary scorer who can produce with elite players. That's the going rate for a player of that ilk.

If Guentzel could drive the offense like Crosby or McDavid or Kucherov, then he'd be getting $10+ million per year. But since he's more of a complimentary type, that's why he's getting $6 million.

For the UFAs that may be the case, but not really for the RFAs. Quite a few recent $6M RFA signings who I'd say are better than Guentzel.

Granted, his age may have something to do with it.

I mean... Nylander is a better player than Guentzel, so that kinda doesn't help your point that he's not overpaid.
